Chee Soon Juan spent much of Friday in court. Nothing unusual in that. An opposition leader in Singapore, Chee spends quite a few days in prison and, when he’s not in prison, quite a few more in court, as a defendant.

Singapore’s ruling party has been in charge for a half-century — since self-rule began in 1959 — and the opposition Singapore Democratic Party has never mustered more than three seats in Parliament.

This may be because everyone in Singapore is happy with life. It might also have something to do with the fact that few people would want to live the life of Chee Soon Juan, the SDP’s secretary general.

Chee returned to Singapore in 1990 after earning a PhD in neuropsychology at the University of Georgia. Two years later, he lost a bid for Parliament as a member of the SDP. No big deal, you might think, in a country that calls itself a democracy. But he was promptly fired from his university post, ostensibly for misappropriating postage stamps — and that was just the beginning.

It was not postage stamps. It was courier fees for a single item that amounted to more than $200 and it came out from the research funds. The article that was sent by courier did not belong to him or to NUS but to this wife. It was her PHD dissertation which was with a different University.

In addition there were a series of inflated taxi claims. Chee has never ever been disputed these charges or explained any of this except to claim that it was politically motivated which is obviously true.

In any country including the first world, things like this will not be accepted for any employment let alone public. This is primary reason why he faltered badly in Macpherson and continues to poll badly compared to all other opposition candidates despite making sense in his book, his speeches and his comments.

A black mark that still hangs over his head. Postage stamps, stationery taken home, toilet roll taken home etc which have been used by others does not paint the picture for Singaporeans some of whom are wondering why he polls badly despite making sense.

Its best to state the facts and let them decide.

however, chee politicised it accusing vasoo for sabotaging him cos chee was wanted to join opp party.

such pattern of putting forth pictures which obscured view and hidden motive - that was what i wanted to point out to many about posting here.

front is one picture; back is another.

Would Vasoo have actually bothered about this issue, apparently to the extent of secretly tape recording his meeting with Dr Chee, if Dr Chee had not gone public and joined the opposition? I wonder:rolleyes:

i think u r seriously cumfused!

chee was the one who taped the conversation between he n vasoo. obviously, he tot he could use that to his advantage but it backfired on him. just like how he was taping that court proceeding recently and airing over his sdp website.

if the court wanted to hantam him on this, it would be so easy.

his behaviour doesn't endorse him as a "gentleman" and if we believe he is, then good luck to you!:)

Hundreds of people are sacked every day for all kind of reasons, and I don't think they'd joined Opposition.

Get your facts right. It was the MONGREL who bit his masters' hands LOUDHAILER chee soon juan who was secretly taping his meeting with Prof. Vasu. Would he have done it if he were not guilty of stealing research funds?

The moment you put your hat into the ring to stand as an opposition candidate, the PAP will try every trick in the book including tax evasion to nail you. In Chee's case, it was a windfall and it will last the PAP a lifetime.

If Chee had not stood for the opposition, even a sharp eyed auditor who is thorough would not have found it. He would have assumed that it was Chee's dissertation.

Sadly it does reflect on Chee's integrity and character. Character defects of this nature are never tolerated by professional governing bodies and companies that require high standard of integrity such such as banks.

I found it funny that it took an absolute idiot like vasoo to go after this. This guy is one of the worst at arselicking that you can find. His son is not far from it.

Actually, if you know how NUS used to work during those times, I wouldn't be surprised if they may find out anyway. A friend who used to teach there in the early 90s said that the internal auditors would be so fastidous even about the height of a chair being used by a staff member (it was a recycled high back chair which could only be used by deputy directors). Can imagine it will now be even worse.

don't u all find that chee soon juan is trying to play up the FEAR which isn't there or just imaginary?

he has all the reasons because of his present state and predicament. it's all not due to the gov wanted to pin him but he himself wanting to betray his own country and in the end backfired. we could rewind about all his public clowning antics and purposefulness in all his actions.

he planted the seeds of doubt and discredit. it's a kind of "white terrorism" like i mentioned before. it plays on the peoples' minds and instigate resentment and hopefully exploiting that to create havoc to an otherwise peaceful nation.

PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED!

They might have picked out the inflated taxi fares as auditors always aim for travel and entertainment expenses. However I understand that it came out from the research funds which they normally ignore as academics tend to be very conservative with this.

Actually for taxi fares it's strange, since you can only "cheat" $1 or so even if you wanted to.

was there any accounting or accountability for his public donation in SDP website? he always stresses on "transparency". could he be so transparent that he has become the INVISIBLE MAN?

it spawned a DONATION BANDWAGON. chiatilik asking for it. gopalan asking for it. who else next? the 3 stooges in kangaroo Ts?

If these bunch of crooks were to run our little red dot (heavens forbid) the first thing on their mind is hijacking our reserves and after that 'appealing' to the world for donations because they know next-to-nothing about getting things done here. If this nightmare of a scenario is not frightening enough ... go ahead and vote these buggers in the next election.

He is not only seriously cumfused but fucked-up as well in choosing to support a most treacherous scum-of-this-Earth!:(

Dear Scroobal

Actually Dr Chee's case was in my view akin to someone using or bringing home "office paper" and or "borrowing" office stationary. God knows how many civil servants I know out that who have claimed for taxi expenses which were personal but they claimed as work related. The question as always is the degree or extent and did it justify his dismissal.

Actually such actions are not prompted by the monetary value of the matter. He just needs to cheat for cheating sake. Something like a career criminal he gets his thrills just doing it. Also like a kleptomaniac let loose in a departmental store can u imagine what he will do with our hard-earned and precious reserve if he ever gets the chance to get hold of them? Maybe give them away to those clowns in charge of those Demo-Crazy fellas in those Thai airports because they have a common cause ........ at our expense of course but u think he bloody cares?

I know an American MNC in Singapore that sacked a company VP for taking home his HP standalone printer home. It only costs $184. There is also a law firm that terminated a law partner for converting his business class to economy and pocketing the difference.

Postage stamps, office paper or borrowing stationery does not equate to inflating taxi fare claims. It does show character defect. Would you hire such a person?

okay, since both PAP-supporters and Opposition-supporters are unanimous that CSJ has a character defect which a few million dollars worth of salary will not cure, let write him off and move on.

let's instead talk of paragons of virtue which are above stealing petty items, both on the PAP side (all of them wear white) and Opposition side (which must be all of them including Leetahbar (which party ticket are you standing on?), Gopalan and company).

it will certainly give us greater confidence in our leaders and alternate leaders.

the election period is coming soon, how soon we do not know, but it is not too soon to extol the virtues of the remaining opposition leaders (who do not wear white).

He should had came clean earlier on or initially when he stood for election to the voters. He should had said, "What to do? It happened! Let's move on!":D
