Indonesian tycoon Liem Sioe Liong dies at 96

looks like you've never attended a private privileged party in hk. stanley is a macau tycoon. not invited to hk parties. hk tycoons would never rub shoulders voluntarily with the nouveau riche from the prc. perhaps high officials to gain access to privileges and advantage in china, but not whipper snappers. when hk tycoons showboat, 99% of the hk populace let alone sinkies who don't even know this exist will never hear of it. hotel management will ensure word doesn't get out to the street. and it's only held at extremely exclusive hotels with very professional staff. sg and ml tycoons pale in comparison, and perhaps for good humble reasons.

What u say is not true. STanley Ho did a lot of business in HKG and many HKG people who want to do business in Macau must have his approval first. At his prime, his control over Macau was absolute. For example, if you want to open a bank in Macau, u better be his friend. Not to give him face by not inviting him to your lavish banquet is like asking for trouble. Whether he will attend or not is another matter. By the way, HKG has very much a more open paparazzi style press, and if there were any lavish parties held in secret attended by big names and famous people, these paparazzi will ferret it out. SOmeone always talks.

Indeed. How else do you think Singapore, on the whole, is so rich? Singapore produces nothing of quality. It contributes nothing to the world economy. A rent-seeking parasite and that's about it. Which is the largest company on the SGX by market capitalisation? Singtel. And how did Singtel become such a large company? By being a parasite of the blood and sweat of dumb sinkies and an enabler of tax evasion and money laundering.

I finally agree with something you say

I would think Stanley Ho is bad example.
Maybe he is good at hiding his assets but for someone who was known as casino king, his net worth was always not 'up there' with the big boys.....even genting boss was worth much more than him.
When he was healthier he always threw lavish parties, one notable one was a birthday bash that lasted for days where he invited all the women in his life...numbering by the proverbial bus loads.

Li Ka Shing would be an example of a low key tycoon.
The weddings of his sons were all simple affairs and he once walked out of a restaurant after looking at the menu citing prices were too expensive!

Perhaps u are right. Li Ka Shing still lives in the same house he bought decades ago, but I think that is more for fung shui.

Yes heard people like Ng Teng Fong and CK Tang were known to be misers while their children live it up

I don't know about Ng Teng Fong' family, but CK Tang certainly did not let his children live it up. Leaving aside his daughters, his oldest son Wee Cheng was a decent modest chap. He did not spoil his kids, and was a deeply religious man. The other 2 sons Wee SUng and Wee Kit also did not "live it up" . Although Wee Kit had a Lotus Europa went he was a young man and crashed it, they are low keyed compared to many other tycoon's sons.

he was the king of macau before the prc takeover. of course, 1st gen hk tycoons would have to go thru' him for any big business deals in macau. but i'm talking about after the takeover, and no 2nd gen hk parties of the rich would voluntarily invite him and his ilk. they deal direct with prc power brokers now. old foxes and triads were never invited to those parties. didn't see li ka shing there too, nor his son. li doesn't indulge in these lavish private parties. he's a billionaire. these snobs are multi-decade-millionaires. big class difference even among the very wealthy in hk.

On one of my in-camps I met a Tang and he obviously wasn't one of those white horses. This compares to another well connected individual I met during NS.

The white horse was one of the "privileged" Sporeans. Everyone in the unit knew about his status. :D It was embarrassing to have him around since he would just drive to camp & lounge around for the day. Would only see him once or twice a month, if at all. He spent more time at the pool since he was a sportsmen. ;)

I don't know how old u are, so I cannot say which in-camp this is. But if you are talking about the 3 tang brothers who are sons of CK Tang, they never did NS. If you are talking about the grandsons of CK tang, than only Wee Cheng had sons. Wee Kit and Wee Sung were childless to my knowledge. Wee Cheng's sons Keith and Jeff did not do in-camp as they were PES B. If u are talking about Keith and Jeff's sons, I am not even sure they did NS, as they are all New Zealand citizens/PRs. I may be mistaken, its been a few years since I talked to them. So bottom line, I am not sure which Tang u refer to, care to elaborate?

By the way, there are many levels of White Horse. U have to be more specific. SOme of the WH are indeed sportsman, I know most of them. Drop a name, maybe I know him.

This is ancient history from way back in the late 70's. :o Can't even remember their names since I didn't mix with them. Just heard that they were related to the Tangs.

The white horse I'm more familiar with is Keith Hseah. Before NS he went to school in England. His father is a doctor.

Pes B no need to do in-camp? Are u sure or not Uncle P?

Hahaha, not their kind of PES B. In those days if your salary is very high, they will not call you for in-camp. Let's be clear about one thing. these guys (and all connected and very rich people in singapore) are super white horse. Would it suprise you to know that they are actually PES A? But got all of a sudden downgraded to PES B, and spend their NS at Mindef (in Tanglin at that time) to be near their family business at Tang's. If they can pull string to get donwgraded, and than pull string for their NS posting, trust me, its nothing for them to pull string to avoid In-camp.

However, in general yes, PES B got in-camp.

sorry, who u referring to?

I think the eldest son....heard he kena disowned by his old man.
Heard the clan bought up entire block in a condo in scotts road in the 90s...one unit for every member of the clan. Big news back then but now nothing shocking.

U talking about CK Tang's sons or Wee Cheng's sons?

This morning I read with amusement in the ST Online top story with headline:

I was amused as I never know a highly corrupted businessman (mafia depending how one looks at it) on the run can be hailed as "humble tycoon" on national government sanctioned newspaper like that.

Saw the news clip of funeral on CNA - the women all exuded class and good-looking, even in grief. Grief in now having to spend without worrying too much about what the old man will say.
