"NTD television obtained a copy of a secret order sent by China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television to media outlets across China. It prohibits the sale of programs to NTD. But not only are Chinese media prohibited from working with NTD, Chinese people are put in prison just for watching the television station.
Late 2010, the Chinese State Administration of Radio, Film and Television sent a secret order to media outlets in China banning them from providing this television network any programs. The order also directed media outlets in China from using any programs from NTD.
It warned that violators would be made to seriously account for their actions.
The former editor in Hebei People's Radio, Zhu Xinxin said, media in China are mouthpieces of the CCP, and they cannot make their own choices.
[former editor in Hebei People's Radio, Zhu Xinxin]:
"The CCP limited a lot of programs from being sold to NTD. The CCP actually fears NTD, because it broadcasts a lot of programs and some featured films that reflect the true situation in China."
Zhou Shiyu, the Vice President of NTD, says the CCP has made many efforts to suppress NTD for over a decade.
[Vice President of NTD, Zhou Shiyu]:
"In the past decade, the CCP has suppressed NTD. It also spreads slander about NTD among the Chinese community."
Not only are media ordered not to sell their programs to NTD, but people in Mainland China who install satellite dishes to watch NTD's free to air signal are persecuted.
[Falun Gong Practitioner Lin Mingli] :
"There is a Falun Gong practitioner in Shanghai, I won't tell the name. He installed the satellite receiver and could watch NTD's programs. His family felt NTD was great so they invited fellow practitioners and neighbors to watch together. Maybe one of neighbors reported on them. The whole family were arrested after one week. And many people were arrested including those who don't practice Falun Gong. That practitioner was sentenced to six years in prison. His father and mother were sentenced to 3 years and 4 years in prison respectively, only because of watching TV. He was at his office when he was arrested. He was sentenced to six years. I met him in prison, and he told me that personally."
Mr Chin, a resident of Wuhan, said that he prefers NTD television.
[Wuhan Resident, Mr. Chin]:
"Why watch news with the same tone? —I’d like to see more of NTD; the blockade is too tight. It would be great if NTD could broadcast in China. I like commentator Shi Tao particularly—Shi Tao analyzed 2 years ago that Bo Xilai would fall, but in China media have only just started reporting about Bo Xilai.”
While it isn't known how many people in mainland China watch NTD television, it is available over the internet and by satellite. Viewers come to NTD because it provides coverage that isn't available anywhere else."
