Calling on Sinda youths to keep Singapore open, Vivian Balakrishnan made a curious point “’The person who contemptuously speaks about immigrants could also be capable of turning against the minorities here at home”.
The reality is that the statement is a hyperbole, and not in sync with the current reality. Unhappiness with foreigners has nothing to do with discriminating against minorities, it has to do with being displaced from jobs, being at a disadvantage due to national service obligations, the list goes on. There is no need to look any further than a Bloomberg report which states that 70% of the 122,600 jobs created went to foreigners.
A communication skills expert who teaches medical practitioners the finer art of communication with patients once said “to build a close rapport with your patients, you need to validate their emotions, to acknowledge how they feel about their illness and put them into emphatic words”. Certainly, Balakrishnan who was a medical practitioner will be very much familiar with this. This clinical situation can be extended to politics, empathising with the masses brings you support while condemning their concerns is only going to result in a voter backlash.
