Steven Chong to be Singapore's new Attorney-General

By S Ramesh | Posted: 31 May 2012 1758 hrs

SINGAPORE: Justice Steven Chong Horng Siong, who will be Singapore's new Attorney-General (AG) from 25 June, said he is now moving on to a new chapter in his career in law as the country's AG after spending more than 25 years in private practice before joining the Bench.

In a statement released on Thursday, Justice Chong said he found the time on the Bench to be both extremely fulfilling and meaningful.

He added that the office of the AG occupies a crucial role in the administration of justice in Singapore in addition to the immense responsibility as the government's chief legal adviser.

Justice Chong looks forward to working with the team of public service lawyers to meet whatever challenges lie ahead.

He added that the present Attorney-General, Mr Sundaresh Menon, has initiated numerous positive changes to the management and administration of the Attorney-General's Chambers and he is committed to continuing this trend to effect changes wherever necessary to further improve the quality and efficiency of our work.

The outgoing AG and new Judge of Appeal, Sundaresh Menon, added in a separate statement that serving as the Attorney-General and being entrusted with the considerable responsibilities have been the greatest privilege of his professional life.

The office of the Attorney-General provided a broad platform from which one had the opportunity to make a difference in the course of one's professional work.

As the Public Prosecutor, Mr Menon added that he has greatly benefitted from the support of the Bar which has whole-heartedly embraced the view that both sides are engaged in a collaborative venture to assist in the administration of criminal justice.

Mr Menon added that Justice Steven Chong is well-placed to take over the office of the Attorney-General.

Why Walter Woon got no share in this transfer goodies?

Eh... may I speculate?
He withdrew the appeal against Hougang aunty's application to challenged LHL?

Yes. AG's Chambers simply didn't know what to do with Mdm Vellama Maire Muthu's bid to the High Court through lawyer M. Ravi. The AG made flip flopping decisions thus screwing up the process resulting in Hougang aunty gaining the upper hand unwittingly. Now the AG is scrambling to halt the hearing again. LKY made Sundaresh Menon pay the price. It's never the intention of the govt to appoint an AG for only two years, it's simply too short to be effective not to mention being disruptive. Tan Boon Teik and Chan Sek Khong all served umpteen years but Walter Woon was AG for barely two years. He took on Lee Wei Leng's outburst against the conviction of Tang Wee Sung's (C K Tang's son) in the illegal sale of kidney case giving the ugly Princess a fierce tongue lashly. This was suicidal as Old Fart took it personally (not expected though) and send him straight back to academia making the announcement of Woon's departure way before the two-year period was up. This is how vindictive the Old Fart is.

If you compare WW with some others, it pales in comparison. I dare say LKY was MOST vindictive against JBJ. Everything and anything goes as long as JBJ is destroyed. That's the brutal truth alright.
