Eye surgeon, patient settle case out of court

Lawsuit had alleged doc did Lasik despite tests showing she was a poor candidate for surgery

By Selina Lum

An eye Fdoctor who was sued for medical negligence has settled the case with his patient out of court.

Dr Marc Tay Tze-Hsin, 51, will pay the patient, Ms Song Lee Shen, 42, an undisclosed sum of money without admission of liability on his part.

Ms Song, who is in the IT industry, sought treatment from Dr Tay in November 2007 to correct her vision. He carried out evaluation tests on her eyes to determine if she was a good candidate for Lasik surgery.

In her lawsuit, filed in 2010, Ms Song alleged that Dr Tay did not inform her that the tests showed that she had a degenerative corneal condition in her right eye, which made her a poor candidate for corrective eye surgery. Instead, he told her she was suitable and carried out the procedure on both her eyes the next day.
