No alternative to raising productivity, says Tharman
By Sara Grosse | Posted: 13 April 2012 2129 hrs

SINGAPORE: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said there is no alternative to raising productivity as the government embarks on a major restructuring of the economy.

He said the government will spare no effort to help businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, to make this transition to higher productivity, which will in turn lead to higher wages for workers.

Mr Tharman was speaking at the Indian New Year celebrations in Serangoon.

On the Indian Community, he said one of its achievements is that it has become more cohesive over the years.

Mr Tharman said: "It's a community that's coming closer together. We've got to keep up the spirit and also make an effort as we have new immigrants coming into our society.

"Make a special effort to integrate them, and the new immigrants themselves also must make a special effort to understand our society, understand the fact that it is multicultural with major ethnic groups that are from very different parts of Asia."

Several Indian communities gathered in Little India to showcase their own art forms and customs. These included exhibitions on Indian culture, tradition and heritage.

Mr Tharman added that more professional and business elite have become involved in the community, and that philanthropy efforts are on the rise in this group.

The week-long Indian New Year celebrations aim to forge a strong bond among various ethnic Indian communities as well as other racial communities within Singapore.

Same old same old.....what has the government done to improve productivity for the last 20 years to-date? Were they caught by surprise yet again or were they too complacent using the cheap labour and new migrants to increase the GDP?

What they are unable to resolve 20 years ago, you believe they can achieve it today? So by making speeches about productivity this will happen? Talk is cheap but Singaporeans in general are feeling the pain of stagnant wages, higher cost of goods and services and COE's.

The PAP GOVT needs to improve n increase it's productivity BEFORE it can talk about n advise others to be more productive.DON'T JUST TALK ONLY,DO IT !!!
Knnccb!!!

They have done nothing much about productivity except talk about it. If I have the time, I would like to dig up fucking past Zorro's speeches about productivity.

Notice the direction and tone of the govt has changed and it is adopting a tough upping productivity approach now to bosses?

You think it's becuz of the gE2011 and loss of 1 GRC? No.

There is global uncertainty and the world looks set to slide into a global recession. What do you think will happen if we still hold back so many foreign workers and PRs who arent decided to be stayers or quitters? With the world going into a downturn, there will be no expansion and no new jobs; they'll need to kick out the foreign workers so that there wont be as tight a squeeze on the job market for locals. If not, disgruntled jobless locals will be another axe to fall on their heads come GE2016.

So dont think that govt has suddenly waken up to productivity imperatives. This point in time gives the govt a good reason to kick the butts of bosses to appear popular. When times are good, they'll bend over backwards for the employers, not workers.

It might be schadenfreude but it is comforting to know that our ministers are mortals - albeit highly paid ones. As Einstein once said, insanity is repeating the same things and expecting different results.

How about no alternative to giving away our reserves to the IMF?
