Girlfriend "robbed" Her Boyfriend's savings after relationship turned sour

We often hear of cases amounting to cheating of large amounts of money some to the tune of 30-100 million. Yet the punishment for stealing $50 is so harsh.

SINGAPORE - Sheena Seng Wang Ru, 28, was fined $25,200 yesterday under the Computer Misuse Act.

In 2010, she was working as a part-time customer service assistant at the Clementi branch of United Overseas Bank.

In January that year, she used the debit card of her former lover Lee Hwa Chai to make purchases amounting to $2,115 and ATM withdrawals totalling $570.

He complained to the bank about these transactions on his return from China on Jan 27.

His debit card was then blocked, but by forging his signature on cash withdrawal forms, she was able to take out $6,350 from his account in February and March 2010.

Mr Lee, 31, complained again, and checks revealed that she was behind these transactions.

Investigations also revealed that she would check his bank balance before making purchases and withdrawals, which amounted to more than $9,000.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Charlene Yang said Seng breached the law by using her position as a teller to check his account balance when he had not authorised or requested her to do so.

Defence lawyer Vinit Chhabra told the court that when she was in a relationship with Mr Lee, she was privy to his bank account details and he was aware of this, and she even used his debit card to make purchases while he was away.

He is believed to be an entrepreneur who often travelled to China on business.

After their break-up, she was very upset as she felt she had been made used of.

'She felt it was justifiable for her to access his bank account, which she accordingly did, resulting in the present proceedings against her,' said Mr Chhabra.

But she did not have to face charges of theft as her ex-boyfriend withdrew his complaints against her.

I am so bloody angry reading this. She got away with a fine, a person entrusted to managed funds. Was there not a case of a man who broke into a company and stole it's cash register? He ran off with it only to discover it had a few dollars. He was jailed for many months for the theft.

Now tell me who is the bigger thief, the trusted employee with access to all the funds or an outsider who broke into the store?

They always have a certain mentality when punishing crime.
The mentality in this case is "they bf gf mah".
In addition, white collar in nature, and they also have friends and family who may one day embezzle or abscond.
Cash register type of crimes, they will never be involved.
Imagine if someone robs a bank and fires a gun without hurting anyone, he gets the death penalty.
