Where is Tolerance?

The Taoist Federation is furious over a model wearing genuine taoist robe....... so they claim. Its president Tan Thiam Lye threatens to lodge police report....

Is wearing a taoist garb an offence? What is this incident compared to insults hurled at Taoism by a Christian pastor not long ago - he got hugged n forgiven in full public glare. Kind of scoring points in the public can extinguish sin, crime n what have you not.

Appears to me that the real issue is wearing that a real garb which means if it were custom tailored, there will not be an issue. The bigger picture is one of increasing intolerance from a religious group which is supposed to be humble n respectful plus tolerant esp a chap like Tan Thiam Lye who is also chief of IRO or Interfaith Religious Organisation. Or it is saber rattling to showoff its new found muscle? Or cheap publicity from our religious brethen?

You got it all wrong. It was wearing that robe in a most disrespectful manner. The robe is supposed to be worn only by priests when the conduct ceremonies and not by some random fashion waif model wearing it as some cheap accessory on some fashion show.

Let's just change the religion. Suppose the fashion wore an islamic outfit now would it be deemed offensive? Would you write in exactly the same manner and use the same arguments right here? I doubt it.

Somehow i doubt you would write it this way if the garb involving a more volatile religion was involved. I'm cock sure the organizers and designers on the show were well aware of that too. Why didn't they get the model to wear something islamic? Cos they would most likely risk death from some religious islamic fundamentalist while if it involved a beign religion it wouldn't happen. I don't think double standards should be perpetuated. If muslims have a right to be offended then so do ppl from other religions.
