OpenNet: How messy is the installation?

Everyone who owns a home has to decide if they want to have the fibre line installed. Would like feedback from those who have already had it installed. How neat or messy is the installation I've got a false ceiling at my apartment & worried about the contractor ruining the aesthetics of my neat hidden wiring.

Currently I have phone jacks & starhub cable points installed in the living room as well as the bedrooms. Would anyone recommend doing the same for OpenNet

they share with existing starhub cable line wiring, it will be pulled and covered together with it. only at the end they T off and separated to have 2 different outlet, one for cable one for fiber optics. this is for my situation

Not that bad actually. Some drilling is involved coz they need to put push the cables in from outside, the wire casings are basically just hammered in. Just need to vaccum/sweep the area they drilled. The job is pretty well done and they finished mine within 30min.

As for where to put it, depends on your house. For me I just install it at the living room, and hook up all my systems using Wifi/powerline network. No need to drag the thing all the way to the room

Depends on your house. My place the cables are all concealed so they had to work around it. The guys installing it can advise you how to run it. The ones who did mine were a few Bangladashis, hardly speaks any english but can still communicate well enough for me to understand them

all opennet workers seem to be kelings. Had mine postponed but it was still free they basically attached some sort of device thing downstairs at the corner of my house living room. i'm not sure if i actually need to fit a wireless router there or if i can still fit my wireless router upstairs in my room. Cos when it comes to wireless connection it's always better to put the router at the highest part of the house.

I think those prcs are at least cleaner than the shit skins. They came to my house during lunch time so they didn't start work immediately and they slept right on the pavement outside like a bunch of dogs.

I went to a talk about Openet installation & someone asked about the type of cable they were using. They are only using 2 core cables Even if you wanted 4 or 6 cores & are willing to pay extra, they don't offer it:( FYI, the extra cost of more cores is only marginally higher & would give the benefit of redundancy in case of problems.

Originally I wanted to have multiple points installed in the different rooms but now I don't think it will be necessary because I doubt that fibre will be implemented in a big way in Spore, at least for another 10 years By then I will have moved out or have done a renovation in which will allow me to install structured cabling.

For the present I will just accept the free installation since it's FREE

there is redundancy, only 1 core is used for the connection.

I'm not sure how messy the installation is. But I do know how messy OpenNet itself is in. The OpenNet consortium is made up largely of GLCs such as SingTel so it's not a surprise that they screwed up bigtime. What's more the supervising govt agency is IDA, another cockup king who just couldn't get the acts of the consortium parties together. Now the different parties are suing each other. The end result is one delay after delay. OpenNet is already way behind schedule. Seeing that there might be a possible breakup within the consortium and IDA's inept handling of the dispute, some parties have thrown their hats into the ring and asked that they be considered replacements. So you see, it's one hella lot messy. And LKY and the PAP said S'pore is a first world country???

Just thought I'd mention the limitation because one person in the audience seemed upset when he found out about the limitation & couldn't upgrade the cable. He mentioned that he installs networks for a living

If the gov't is going to expand money & effort to go into fibre, it's just surprising that they are doing so with little adult supervision

When 1st heard about the project I was thrilled because of the potential for faster connection speeds. I've experienced faster speeds while I was in Canada. It is a delight. The speed is not due to fibre but due to the servers being closer to the US without all the bottle necks i.e. Mda's proxy server, throttling of users speeds, narrow bandwidth, congestion from 5+ million users,.......

That was years ago & now I know better. Obviously having the world's highest paid MPs doesn't translate into competence. Makes one wonder what all that $$$$$$$ is buying

Installation is not a problem.......... only problem is cannot use it unless pay a service provider. WTF! Public fund spent to enrich GLC's

Mine is laying around unused. Can let me know exactly how you use it??? I am not keen to pay Starhub or M1 as I already have MIO from Singtel n it does not require this thingie.

It is not free but funded by our taxes////
