"The centrepiece of the Beijing visit (in 1976) was the formal meeting between the prime minister's delegation and the Chinese premier Hua Guofeng.

During the discussions, Hua presented the PM with a book, saying, 'This is a correct version of the war between China and India. I hope you will find it useful.'

Lee Kuan Yew took the book, looked at the front cover, looked at the back, and said, 'Mr Prime Minister, this is your version of the war. There is another version, the Indian version. And in any case, I am from Southeast Asia - it's nothing to do with us.'

He handed the book back.

For me, this was a very important moment, a clear confirmation that Lee Kuan Yew, although ethnically Chinese, was his own man, in no way subordinate to China or the Chinese communists.

We in Singapore had a separate, multi-racial identity. What we made clear was that we should not be taken for granted.

The Chinese foreign minister Qiao Guanhua was rather agitated but kept his cool; his wife did not, and walked out of the room in a huff." - SR Nathan.

... in his book, 'An Unexpected Journey: Path to Presidency (pg 424).

SRN was then Director SID.

Im sure his son would not have the guts to do it to the Chinese now.

That time China was nothing...now...its different.

ron ron,

your balls-licking skills have 更 上 一 層 樓

congrats.

Aiyah, this incident happened 36 donkey years ago... Now Old Man and Son bend down to the Ah Tiongs and the Ah Nehs.. This Por Lumpar tribute by Prata Man was his own way of thanking his Benefactor the Old Fart, for making him into a multi millionaire.. Every good dog should thank his Master...

A few years before LKY led this team there, US President opened the gates to China and visisted Mao. LKY did not initiate this. China too was falliing out with the other power - USSR, and looked elsewhere for friends. Nixon and Mao made a great diplomatic leap in their meetings then, and the US started taking a serious look at acupuncture.

Cheers!

did LKY and Prata told the CCP leaders that they worked for the Japanese during WW2? i don't think the Chinese leaders would mind because they also refused to fight the Japanese back then.

Did SRN as SID chief conduct any secret ops against India or China?

I believe Singapore was the last ASEAN country to establish diplomatic ties with the PRC.

A case of betting on the horse late or a display of ASEAN solidarity?

LKY was the greatest flip-flopper and political opportunist.

When the British were in charge he was pro his colonial masters.

Then when the push for joining Malaysia gained momentum, he went against them.

And when the communists seem to become a real political threat to his own power, he abandoned his socialist stance and sided with the Westerners.

Before the Soviet Union collapsed and when the Cold War was going on, he suppressed Chinese education (e.g. Nantah).

When China became an economic powerhouse, he encouraged everyone to be 'bilingual and bicultural'.

How can anyone with conscience condone, much less respect, this unprincipled tyrant?

Really? Do you have the source?

it take guts to reject a gift and refute a commie leader, you need a ball of steel to do it during the end of Culture revolutions. I am proud of such leader! Long live LKY!

Prataman clearly admired LKY, but he has no balls to emulate his idol. All he did during his presidency was cut ribbons and go around the stadium once a year.
