In politics every political party that has the peoples' interest at heart must always strive to strike a good balance between being idealistic and being effective.

A party that has no ideals and only wants to win votes and get power will not serve the people's interest. Such a party would see power as an end in itself and there's not telling what it might to do with power once it has obtained it. Furthermore, such a party would also be tempted to use underhand methods to achieve its aims.

A party that is very idealistic but does not pay enough attention to being effective will also not serve the peoples' interest. Without a sense of pragmatism and how to act in a politically effective manner, all the ideals would go to waste because the people will not see the benefit of rallying behind such a party. Furthermore, the MSM will also find it easy to vilify and castigate such a party, making all its efforts futile and even destructive.

Therefore every party must strike a balance between the two. Furthermore every party must understand the nature and the usage of power itself. Power is needed if a party wants to advance its ideals.

The seeking of power without a sense of idealism would also result in a tyrannical party that would act dishonorably.

Being idealistic but without understanding the nature of power would result in being marginalized and trampled upon by those who understand power and are able to wield power effectively.

Hence all parties that seek to make headway and achieve its aims must seek a balance between idealism and pragmatism, and must also understand the nature and usage of political power.

I also wish the world were a better place:

In layman terms i suppose you mean to say don't expect a party to be perfect and don't be overly critical at the slightest mistake a party makes.
Judge the party on its overall performance, let them finish their 5 years before jumping to a conclusion. This seems obvious enough, unfortunately a lot of people don't see it. I suppose Sinkies are not evolved enough :-D
