A 23-year-old was killed while installing seats and the authorities have stopped construction pending an investigation into worker safety

Work has been suspended at Sao Paulo's Corinthians Arena, just over two months before the start of the World Cup.

The news comes after Fabio Hamilton da Cruz, a 23-year-old labourer, fell to his death while installing seats at the stadium, becoming the third person to die during the stadium's construction.

Installation of the remaining chairs was stopped pending an investigation into how employee safety can be improved.

"We are monitoring the situation and hope that the doubts and concerns the regional labour office may have are rapidly cleared and concluded so that the environment is safe for the full resumption of work," an email from the World Cup organising committe said.

There have also been deaths during work on the Arena da Amazonia in Manaus and the Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha in Brasilia.

The Corinthians Arena is set to host the opening match of the tournament, between Brazil and Croatia on June 12.
