A woman in southern China was almost killed when she tried to clear her throat by forcing the handle of a 30-cm long kitchen spatula down her mouth, according to a newspaper report.

The woman from Dongguan in Guangdong province was cooking in her kitchen earlier this month when she suddenly felt ill and gasped for breath, the Southern Metropolis News reported.

She first tried her fingers and then chopsticks to clear her throat and finally forced the handle of the spatula down her mouth.

Her daughter, aged four, took her downstairs for help as she struggled to breathe, the report said.

The woman, 31, whose full name was not given, was treated at the Kanghua Hospital in Dongguan.

Doctors have carried out two operations on the housewife and removed most of her oesophagus, according to the report.

Medics said they could find no blockage in her throat that may have led to her struggling for breath and the patient has undergone a psychiatric evaluation.

She is recovering and will be discharged from hospital in two weeks, the report said.
