Singapore ― In an open letter to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on social media, a woman has opined that projects such as ‘Gardens at the Airport’, Medishield Life, affordable HDBs and education “Changes” are all “sillier than how you look in pink”. She wrote that she felt PM Lee had “misplaced priorities”.
Starting out with Gardens at the Airport – a term which likely refers to the Enchanted Garden at Terminal 2, the Butterfly Garden at Terminal 3, a Cactus Garden and many others scattered throughout the airport, she wrote:
“We do not need more billion dollar playgrounds for foreigners. Gardens by the Bay cost $1.1 billion to build, $53 million a year to maintain…!
As for your pet Project Jewel, Singapore is now bleeding at least $100 million every year just on maintenance alone…!”
She went on to talk about MediShield Life, a basic health insurance plan, administered by the Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board.
“Universal insurance for Singaporeans is a good step in the right direction. But how much are you going to make us pay…?” she asked.
Comparing Singapore’s MediShield Life with a similar Australian policy, she wrote:
“We have had enough of you telling us “you cannot opt out”. Your CPF Life Annuity was like this. Why am I not allowed the choice to opt-out when you have no transparency and accountability to show of in your system…?”
On the topic of HDB flats, she opined that public housing was not affordable.
“What is affordable when you have to take a 25 year loan? You are encouraging irresponsible parents to take up huge loans and pass on the debt over to their children”, she wrote.
“When we talk about Education “changes”, nothing has been mentioned about the lack of university places and the increasing costs of tertiary education. Right when you are calling every foreigner holding a degree “talent”, you are doing nothing to help aspiring Singaporeans obtain their degrees, so please, cut the hypocrisy and keep your change”, she wrote.
She continued: “Despite your ludicrous proposals, there are also many issues you conveniently swerved out of – foreigner population, escalating cost of living, COE prices, public transport breakdowns, inadequacy for retirement, media control, widening income gap, increasing corruption cases, depressed salaries, unfair NS treatment, dipping standard of living resulting in growing unhappiness among the people, etc”.
At the end of the letter, she calls for PM Lee to resign, adding: “If your idea of a Singapore is a mix of little India, little China and little Philippines, please say so earlier so we Singaporeans could all make our emigration plans”.
