Lim Hock Siew (1931-2012) – a fiercely independent unbending tenacious political fighter all his life

I remember meeting him 24 years ago at a party hosted by my mentor Professor Arthur Lim. They were classmates in medical school and life long friends.

He introduced himself as “I am Lim Hock Siew, and just came out of prison a few years ago!”

We had a good chat and he freely shared his life experiences. I was struck by the absence of bitterness despite all his sacrifices. I think he knew in his heart that he was a patriot, and was proud that he never gave in.

I consulted him before I entered politics. He did not discourage me. On the contrary, he told me to focus on doing the right thing. He told me he did not bear any ill will to the current leaders. He reminded me that he was a founding member of the PAP.

We met from time to time socially. Whenever we discussed politics, it was obvious that he was still a conviction socialist. There were times, we agreed to disagree.

Singapore has lost another member of the founding generation. We must all be deeply grateful to him and his family for all their sacrifices. He was a good and honourable man.

Allow me to give the background to how Viv ended up in this situation. This guy has got more angles than a Polygon.

1st year Medical students in King Edward Hall undergo hazing also,known as "orientation" which is considered the most severe compared to any other faculty or hall. In fact they prepare the cheque for the expected fine that the University admin imposes for going overboard well before hand. Viv within 2 days fell out and refused to participate. Their orientation is considered a serious passage of rights that goes all the way into their life long vocation. It plays a huge part down the road. A rare few few drop out over the years.

As he burnt his bridge with his medical colleagues, he then went over to Students Union "the general student population" and became president of NUSSU with the help of some interesting establishment figures.

As his career progressed and his political ambition grew he needed to get back into the good books of his medical colleagues. And the man who could facilitate that was Dr Arthur Lim. Arthur is a whole story by himself. Both Arthur and his architect brother William were childhood playmates of old man from Telok Kurau days. Arthur is also the one who passed the information that killed Lim Yew Hock Govt and PAP to form Govt for the first time in 1959. Arthur is also considered the most influential Medical identity and used to hold court at the old University clubhouse. Arthur interestingly has been fierecly loyal to his ex-classmates and that includes Lim, Poh and Rajamanickam of Fajar fame. When they were detained or banished, Arthur kept in touch and was a source of support for the immediate families. Ubiquitious Arthur was also together with Lim Boon Heng the co-organiser of old man,s 70 birthday dash at Shang.

Viv has latched on to Arthur since the word go. He has been riding Arthur's coat-tails since. He accompanied Arthur to Lim Hock Siew's wake.

Viv B has well before entering parliament has nearly visited every important political identity including turning up unannounced at retired Rajaratnam's residence seeking his advice on entering politics. So this prick goes around claiming that he has sought the advice of this and that so and so before entering politics. Giving the impression that he has been endorsed by important political identities for political career. I was thus not surprised that he dropped the same message about seeking Lim Hock Siew's advice. When Dr Poh drops dead, I can bet you this earth that this prick will be at the his wake with his mentor Arthur and again telling the world that he sought Dr Poh advice before entering politics. I won't be surprised that he visited Dr Poh in Canada when latter was residing there after his final release.

If Arthur was a friend of JBJ and not the old man, Viv B would not have attended the wake or no kind words in the FB.
