When did our elections change to once in six years?

Isn't our election supposed to be once in 5 years (which is already long compared to 4 year terms in many other countries)? So if we had our last election in May 2006 why does the familee claim they have up to 2012 to old the next one?

Election Dept starts preparations for GE

The Straits Times

By Aaron Low

THE Elections Department has started preparations for the next general election, which is due at the latest by Feb 2, 2012.

It has identified 28,000 civil servants to become election officials, and has begun sending letters out to them.

Replying to queries from the Straits Times, a spokesman for the Elections Department confirmed that it started sending out the letters last month. These letters notify the public officers of their selection as election officials and the training they will undergo.

Early polls? Possible, though not imminent

PAP wants to be ready to call elections quickly if financial crisis drags out, observers say

POLITICAL observers said yesterday the Elections Department's preparations for elections are a sign that polls could be held earlier, though they are not necessarily imminent.

It also indicates that the Government wants to have the capability to call an election anytime it decides to.

The Elections Department told The Straits Times yesterday that it had begun sending letters to public servants selected to be election officers and informing them of the training they will receive.

The election law has not changed, but the PAP has delayed the first parliamentary meeting to six months after the last election (which is the maximum delay allowed by law). So, under the law the next election is due only five years from that parliamentary meeting, i.e. in Feb 2012.

1. You could be right about that, I dunno. If it's true, it's totally illogical. The term of office should start the moment a government assumes office, right?

2. It still doesn't add up.. May 2006 + 6 months = Nov 2007 and 5 years from there is Nov 2011. Maybe there're many other administrative excuses to give themselves as much time as possible?

Ya, you are right abt that. But Nov 2011 is only the date they must dissolve parliament and the fresh election need only be held three months (at the latest) from that date.
So, you can see, by this simple gerrymeandering, they can delay the required by nine months altogether. Very clever indeed.

general election must be held within 3 months after parliament dissolved, so you add 3 more months

Of course they will try to give themselves more time, because for every month the minister holds his position he gets about $350,000 inclusive of performance bonus, thirteenth month pay, GDP allowance, etc, etc. So, nine months extra means they can earn about $3.5m extra.

Gerrymander still will not stop the wrath of Singaporeans. Just watch. I know they will cheat at elections again, but this time repercussions will be very strong. Singaporeans cannot take pain and PAP do not know how to give candy. The end is near for PAP. Do not be surprised if PAP members defect.

Idiot Baimi. Longer means that the only way citizens can respond will be with terrorist incidents. PAP cannot even try to enjoy their ill gotten millions.

Lan, lan? I do not think so. People are very intolerant today because they are not the immediate postwar generation. You want people to go back to those days while PAP dogs eat sushi? Fuck you? You think your gangster goons on the streets and on the internet will do? Think twice. Better wake up and run the country like it is in the 21st century or there will be trouble. Many people are feeling that way these days. Their overfed dogs are just to sleepy to see.

No, no. PAP is too honourable to cheat, but they have many legal ways to gain effective advantage. For example, they will not release the new GRC map until the very day that Nomination Day is announced. Then they can also announce very tight and difficult-to-fulfil rules such as requiring all campaign posters to be of certain odd not-readily-available sizes and colours, which must then be sent to the Election Dept for approval. These rules would catch the opposition off-guard, and it would take them at least one week to comply with such odd poster sizes and colours to be hung on the best pillars.
