I refer to the condolence letter by the Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong to the sons of the deceased Mr J.B. Jeyaretnam.
Mr Lee blamed Mr Jeyaretnam for attempting to “demolish the PAP and the government” during his stint in Parliament and his failure to build up a “constructive opposition”.
These were his words:
“Perhaps it was because he and the PAP never saw eye to eye on any major political issue and he sought by all means to demolish the PAP and our system of government. Unfortunately, this helped neither to build up a constructive opposition nor our Parliamentary tradition.”
Is Mr Lee alluding to this present “system of government” where:
1. The Election Commission is under the direct purview of the Prime Minister’s Office.
2. PAP ministers are allowed to raise their own salaries as and when they like with flagrant disregard for public opinion.
3. Electoral boundaries are re-drawn at the wimp and fancies of a Electoral Boundaries Review Committee which answers solely to the government of Singapore which is of course the PAP.
4. Policies are formulated and bills passed with little or no consultation with ordinary Singaporeans.
5. The Chairman of the Singapore Press Holdings, which runs the major dailies in Singapore is a former PAP minister, Dr Tony Tan.
