Nominally, the Solicitor General is the government's lawyer. But I feel it is the AG in reality. As the government's lawyer he has to find a loop-hole for his client. It was the tiniest of openings but it worked. Who challenged it ? The AG has the right to bring charges or not.
I feel he should have brought it to court and let the court decide based on that argument argued by the nominal lawyer for the government. Even if in the worse case, the court finds an offence, all that was needed was a small fine and an apology. Even if a bye-election was called, we know the outcome. Then life goes on. Nobody would be tarnished.
