moving the 兵to the left will not be instant checkmate but it is an essential move. the other party's car can go between your 兵 and pao to stop checkmate. the next step after this will be to move the 兵 1 step forward to check again. this time will be checkmate.

I think the game was a fake scenario. One move and the game is over. Whoever has the next turn to make the move, wins.
3rd one ... hard to win even if black cannon takes the red cannon because black cannon cannot check nor move back a little. Moving a step back means the general has the time to escape or cannon block. Free gift take lah. Most likely a draw. Use the cannon to block, don't try to attack - can kanna 'tiew'.
