The Politics of Wang Lun

The Scholar in White (白衣秀士) is not an idiom referring to those “scholars” selected by the PAP to be its candidates for the general elections. It is actually the kungfu nickname of Wang Lun (王伦), a character in the famous Chinese novel, The Water Margin (水浒传).

To understand the character Wang Lun, it is necessary to know what the book, The Water Margin, is about.

The book is made up of short stories of various characters and their adventures. This book is set during the last days of the Song Dynasty where corruption, incompetence in government, political disorder, oppression by the ruling class and the powerful, and cruelty in meting out punishment were the norm. The 108 heroes in the story are actually labelled as “outlaws” because of their opposition to the establishment.

However, because of their determination to fight for universal justice (替天行道), they are regarded as heroes by the common folk and the many generations of readers. It strikes a chord with the generations of oppressed people because the stories are about the heroism of the common people that even peasants can identify with.

The historical background that formed the basis of the book was the reign of the useless Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty. After he ascended the throne, he robbed and exploited the people so much that he aroused peasants to rise up against him. The Water Margin is a fictional account of one of the uprisings led by a hero Song Jiang.

This book is not just an ordinary Chinese kungfu novel. The reason it is one of China’s four greatest novels and an enduring classic is because of its serious underlying theme. It carries a universal and eternal message. For generation after generation and dynasty after dynasty, the inspirational message is to oppose oppression and fight for the rights of the people. It is about the spirit of the people and that the people can decide their destiny. It is about democracy — consensus and equality, group decision against dictatorship. “Within the four seas, all men are brothers.” 四海之内皆兄弟也。

The Water Margin is not just a political novel; it is actually a political primer. It is about how a revolution comes about — by being forced by oppression. It is about how disparate and weak little groups can gel to form a formidable force. Lu Xun, the great modern Chinese writer, described the book as having a reformist spirit.

The book was popular during the Yuan Dynasty because it is an inspirational book extolling the virtue of heroism against domination. For this reason it was banned during the Yuan and Ming dynasties. Even Chairman Mao Zedong was an avid fan. He told a lot of people so, including Edgar Snow, the first Westerner to interview him. By his own admission, he had read the book more than ten times and drawn many political lessons from it. He had advised people to read it as a book of politics.

Mao proclaimed, “The Water Margin reflects the political situation of its times. The Golden Lotus reflects the economic situation of its times. Both books must be read.” (20 Feb 1956)

“《水浒传》是反映当时的政治情况的,《金瓶梅》是反映当时经济情况的。这两本书不可不看。”

We now turn back to Wang Lun, the Scholar in White. During the oppressive reign of Emperor Huizong, there were more than ten opposition parties fighting against the established order. Each group established their various bases on the many mountains in the country and each were led by very strong leaders. Nevertheless, they were weak and ineffective because they were disparaged and fragmented.

Amongst these opposition parties, the biggest and the richest was the one at Liangshan Marsh led by Wang Lun. Unfortunately, Wang Lun lacked talent and was intellectually sub-standard. Even worse, he was small minded and was therefore ineffective.

To the credit of Wang Lun, he had the foresight to choose Liangshan as his base. This mountain stronghold was very secure, easy for fugitives to escape to and difficult for enemies forces to attack. There was an early warning system in place. The absence of directional landmarks in the marsh meant that it was impossible for any enemy force to launch a surprise raid.

In spite of these advantages, Wang Lun never made it big. In fact, in the book, he never even became the 108 heroes of Water Margin. There is a good reason for it. Though he ran the biggest opposition outfit and all the other opposition parties looked up to him, he was a small minded person. His fault was that he was satisfied with his lot and simply turned away talents and people whom he considered were better than him. As a result, his party could not grow. Furthermore, since he was not willing to provide the leadership, there was no opposition unity to talk about to challenge the government forces.

Two incidents illustrate this negative trait of Wang Lun. In the first, a fugitive by the name of Lin Chong went up to Liangshan to seek refuge. Lin Chong was a government military instructor with exceptional fighting skills. He would have been an asset to Wang Lun. Yet, when Wang met him, his first thought was that Lin was definitely more skilful than them and no one would be able to stop him should he challenge them for power. (His actual thoughts were: 我又没十分本事,杜迁、宋万武艺也只平常。如今不争添了这个人,他是京师禁军教头,必然好武艺。倘若被他识破我们手段,他须占强,我们如何迎敌?).

He thus feted Lin, told him that he lacked accommodation and food, and then gave him gifts of silver and silk and bade him to seek refuge in another place.

In the second incident, when the “Righteous Seven” led by Chao Gai came to Liangshan for refuge, Wang Lun again tried to send them away again with gifts. He used the same excuse he had used on Lin Chong earlier. Lin Chong became even more incensed with Wang Lun for his narrow-mindedness and self-interest. Under some instigation, Lin Chong finally killed him and Chao Gai was voted the new chief.

For this reason, Wang Lun did not leave behind a good reputation. Nowadays, the phrase “Scholar in White, Wang Lun” is used to describe a mediocre person who squeezes out or rejects persons who are more capable than him, or someone who preserves his own position by elbowing out others except those who are inferior to him.

Needless to say, under a mean character like Wang Lun, Liangshan did not grow into a formidable force. It was only after his assassination that opposition unity became a reality. All the chieftains from the other more than ten opposition camps then decided to throw their lot with Chao Gai and his group at Liangshan marsh and the rebels became a force that could match the government forces.

For his decisive act, Lin Chong became a popular legendary folk hero in the folklore of China.

Advising his comrades, Chairman Mao Zedong said, “Don’t become like the Scholar in White, Wang Lun from The Water Margin. He does not allow revolution. Any person who does not allow revolution puts himself in a dangerous position. Wang Lun didn’t and he paid for it.” (Selected Works of Mao Zedong)

Instead of aspiring to be his country’s 魏徵 (whether his country is Singapore, China, Taiwan or USA or ???), Chen Show Mao should strive to be his Party’s 林冲, first and foremost.

No matter how hard Chen tries to believe, WP is not led by a broad-minded cosmopolitan 唐太宗 but by a narrow-minded provincial 王伦.

Like 王伦, under Low Thia Khiang’s wimpy rule, WP has been kowtowing, chickening and hiding away from the ruling government instead of actively challenging them. Like 王伦, Low had been unable and unwilling to attract political 真龙 to join his party while infesting his party with all the 假龙. Many have come and left the Hammer under Low’s watch as WP chief, and will continue to come and leave.

Instead of plagiarizing blindlessly from the cyberspace, Chen Show Mao should plagiarize from 林冲 and transform the WP from a small little insignificant 小山寨 to a truly First World political party.

You again. Nothing better to do? After 步步惊心, this again? Make up your mind, which analogy appeals to you more.

Punggol,

Since you like analogies, I have an analogy for you. Understand from another thread that you could be the famous loser in Punggol East in GE2011. If that is the case, can we liken you to 周瑜 from the Three Kingdoms and your misery in the GE as 赔了夫人又折兵?Isn't this as appropriate as your other analogies?

Zhou Yu lost big on that one because of Zhuge Liang outwitted him based on the novel. This loser lost it simply because he CMI.

If we really want to compare him to a character in San Guo, 蒋干 might be more suited?

I named this because not only did he lose Punggol East (I.e. the master's sister together with 荆洲) but also his deposit (I.e.losing badly to 关公, navy against army on land, haha).

To use this analogy on Singapore opposition, the closest it mirrors is JBJ to Wang Lun and LTK, SL, CSM to Chao Gai, Song Jiang and the heroes.

WP under JBJ did not grow and was at one time caught up by SDP. Even SDP under Chee grew better than WP under JBJ. When LTK took over, WP membership expanded and more seats were won.

People have been saying that LTK ousted JBJ. Does that sound like Chao ousting Wang?

The only thing WP didn't achieve what Liangshan did is to bring other parties into its fold, but it did rope a few good ex members of other parties into its fold, eg recently Michelle Lee.

Other than this closest similarity, the other ouster was when Chee ousted Chiam. But no one can say that SDP grew better under Chee, although SDP wasn't necessary better under Chiam.

If anyone wants to dispute that WP isn't like Liangshan because it is more compliant, remember that Song Jiang brought Liangshan to kowtow to the emperor and his evil ministers. Song even spearheaded the initiative to treat Gao Qiu well when the heroes captured Gao.

Wong Wee Nam's story unfortunately shot down JBJ and he probably didn't intend for that.

Low Thia Khiang does not have the charisma, character and integrity as Chao Cai.

Did Chao Cai’s brothers and subordinates come and leave as Low’s “brothers” and subordinates. People like Poh Li Guan, Eric Tan, etc and many many more have trusted Low but ultimately felt betrayed. Did any of Chao Cai’s men feel the same?

Low Thia Khiang is as uncharismatic, untrustworthy, petty and provincial as Wang Lun.

But you may be slightly correct for comparing these Vichy WP eunuchs with Song Jiang since both share the same ultimate goal of working towards a government’s 招安 and are only too happy to act as government lapdogs to attack and sabotage other Opposition “rebels”.

Chao Cai will never accept a government’s 招安 to form a “coalition” regime. He is more loyal to his men (and so are they as none has left him as that WP chief eunucu) and take good care of his men and brothers first and foremost.

How would you know how Liangshan will be under Chao and if he will not do the same thing as Song? Other than the featured heroes, Liangshan also had middle managers and military officers, some which were mentioned in the full story. There was one who betrayed the heroes.

When we use analogies, we should apply them as a whole rather than pick and choose.

In the novel, Liangshan under Chao Gai did not ever suck up to the government. Chao Gai even fought to his death to prove that Liangshan can survive without surrendering to the government and be assilimilated into a “coalition” regime. Unlike Song Jiang who would kill his brother and betray his men to suck up to the government.

There maybe some Liangshan 无名小卒 who chose to betray the heroes, but none of the 108 “CEC” heroes had ever betrayed the trustworthy and charismatic Chao Gai.

Look at WP, so many of their CEC “heroes” felt so betrayed by their Big Brother and ultimately left their untrustworthy and uncharismatic Big Brother. Almost every year, there always have different faces among the WP CEC “heroes” leading the WP 无名小卒.

There is incoherence here but I can chat on the parts that I can understand you. And I will drop the analogy.

Separating of ways is not alien to politics. I can say WP has not gone the way of some parties which lost nearly the whole party leaving its chief alone. These cases are recent and fresh. I don't recall you ever bringing them up to compare context to context (but we have more or less established your bias is only to WP so it's not an eyebrow raiser). To convince people that WP is not electable takes more than selling them as a party of quitters because we would otherwise not be voting for any others including PAP. (But if your intention is not to convince but rant, you have all the space here you want.)

While changing its leadership, some may get ruffled and feel betrayed eg the Indian candidate. But of all people I exclude Poh Lee Guan whom you mentioned because it looks like he betrayed the party than the party betrayed him. WP recently renewed its leadership with no changes which I read as its core having firmed up. The process from 2001 (when LTK assumed leadership) until 2012 was longer than what it could have been but again, is that a reason to find WP unelectable.

You are so Chinese but not cheena. Singapore is like the Andy Lau's movie "The Warlords (2007)". In the end, those that helped them died.
