This is to tell everyone that MM is still alive.

Whatever ailed him (bookies fav is heart attack), it is however quite serious since the normal protocol for this sort of thing is to show him up and about, vigourously going about his daily business.

Also "chest infection" is usually the cover when a prolonged stay in the hospital looks very likely.
