Unreasonable? Don't buy, says stall owner after diner laments about paying $15 for tofu and ngoh hiang

With the rise in food and energy prices, many F&B owners have been struggling to stay afloat.

But they aren't the only ones who are feeling the pinch — some consumers have come forward to complain about the high food prices they've been charged, including a man who goes by the surname Xu.

On July 6, the 47-year-old driver and five of his friends visited a coffee shop at Blk 167 Woodlands Street 13 to drink and chat. This was not their first visit to that coffee shop.

One of his friends purchased a mixed platter of fried ngoh hiang and fried beancurd from a stall the group had not patronised before, according to Shin Min Daily News.

To Xu's shock, the platter only came with three pieces of fried ngoh hiang and four pieces of fried beancurd. This amounted to $15, which he said was "too expensive".

As a comparison, he mentioned that four pieces of tofu in the wet market would usually cost $1, making the price quoted by the stall owner too high.

Later on, he found out that the platter prices were not indicated on the menu, but after speaking to the stall vendor, he was told that it would cost $15.

In an interview with the Chinese daily, the stall vendor explained that the five pieces of fried ngoh hiang would cost $10 on its own while five pieces of fried beancurd would cost $8.

If a customer wanted both in the form of a platter, it would cost $15.

The vendor also said that they are transparent with prices and will usually tell customers before they make payment.

"We will inform customers in advance. If they think it is reasonable, they can buy it, and if it is unreasonable, they can choose not to buy it," said the vendor.

This isn't the only time a stall has come under fire for selling expensive food.

Earlier in June, a man took to Reddit to complain about an economy rice stall in Ang Mo Kio that had charged him $11 for his mixed rice.

In a more recent case, a woman lamented that a stall in Little India had charged her a whopping $15 for a simple takeaway pack of mixed rice consisting of rice, vegetables and what looked like a rendang dish.

In a recent article, a man and his friends complained after being charged what they felt was a too-expensive price for a mixed platter of fried ngoh hiang and beancurd at a food stall at a coffee shop.

The platter, which cost $15, contained three pieces of ngoh hiang and four pieces of beancurd.

However, according to a July 11 report in Shin Min Daily News, after the men complained, the vendor said that they usually inform customers about the prices of the food they sell, and if the customers feel these are unreasonable, they can choose not to buy.

Food prices, after all, have gone up due to inflation.

The customer who complained of the vendor’s high price at a coffee shop at Blk 167 Woodlands Street 13 is Mr Xu, a driver who had visited the coffee shop on July 6 along with five of his friends.

And while the prices for individual dishes were shown on the stall’s menu, the prices for platters were not.
But Xu and his friends were informed about the $15 cost for the mixed platter of fried ngoh hiang and fried beancurd by the stall owner, Shin Min Daily News reported.

Many netizens commenting on the issue acknowledged that food prices have really gone up and that there is no point in complaining.

One commenter said that it looks as though many in Singapore will follow the example of western countries, where people rarely eat out and mostly cook at home.

A woman rather controversially wrote that it “seems that there is ongoing trend that some hawker stalls are putting very high price on the food to pass on all the increased rental and other fees to customers” and suggested “to support those hawker stalls that price their food reasonably instead.”

“Always find out the price of the food before we order,” advised another.

Some felt that the men who complained were being unfair to the stall.

Pack a egg or cheese sandwich to work.
Stall owner is right. Nobody forcing anyone to buy.
PAP should reduce its fuel tax which i estimate to be st 100% to stave off inflation.at least for the time being. That tax can be reimposed once fuel prices depreciate.
