Private tour escorts, a profession emerging recently in China, have been discovered to be heavily involved in prostitution, the China Central Television (CCTV) reported Thursday.

On the websites of many Chinese tour escort agencies, one can find a large number of scantily clad girls introducing themselves with sexually suggestive words, and asking thousands or even tens of thousands of yuan (1 yuan=US$0.16) for their escorting services.

However, the girls announce that they are willing to offer sex services when clients contact them, CCTV's Live News program said. The price the girls list online is for one date only. The charge will be much higher if the clients ask them out for a whole night or a whole day.

In most cases, the girls will provide services at hotels, but some will take their clients to other venues. They always introduce themselves as college students, office ladies or models.

Some of the girls listed on the websites act as a pimp and don't engage in sex services personally. They always resort to popular social media platforms, such as Weixin and QQ, to contact potential clients.

Meng Wei, a researcher of new media at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said it was difficult to discover online prostitution, which has a wide and negative influence on teenagers. She suggested that in addition to the police, online service providers should also take responsibility for the elimination of indecent information spreading on their platforms.
