Delicious Fried Carrot Cake
Block 85 Redhill Lane, Redhill Food Centre, #01-33

Mr Sng Lai Hua, 52, who took over this 54-year-old stall from his parents, fries his version with beansprouts. The radish is cut into thick, substantial chunks, and there is a generous serving of egg. The fresh beansprouts are crunchy and delectable, adding an understated zest to the dish.

Opens: 7.30am to 2pm daily. Closed on Mondays.

Price: $2/$3 (black or white)

He Zhong Carrot Cake
Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre, #02-185

The dish isn’t greasy and the radish is a delight in both taste and texture. The rich flavour of chye poh greets you as you tuck into the dish. What’s pleasantly surprising about He Zhong’s version is that there is plenty of this lovely chye poh. So fragrant, one could even do without chilli.

Opens: 7am to 10pm daily.

Price: $2 ( white)

Xiang Kee Fried Carrot Cake & Fried Oyster
Blk 355 Smith Street, Chinatown Complex Food Centre, #02-24

The stall owner shares a recipe, that has been in the family for over 20 years, with a sister who runs another stall in Toa Payoh. The carrot cake is steamed to just the perfect chewy and springy texture, and has a pleasantly strong taste of radish.

Opens: 9am to 8pm daily.

Price: $2.50 (black or white)

Miow Sin Popiah/Carrot Cake
380 Jalan Besar, Lavender Food Square, #01-04

Carrot cake here looks like an omelette – testament to how it’s impeccably fried, with a delightfully crispy exterior and a thick, moist interior.

Opens: 9am to midnight daily. Closed on alternate Wednesdays.

Price: $3/4/5 (white)

Song Zhou Luo Bo Gao
Block 207 New Upper Changi Road
Bedok Interchange Food Centre, #01-18

This stall uses a recipe that’s more than 30 years old, passed on from the owner’s father-in-law. The black carrot cake is fluffy, with a deliciously smokey flavour. There’s a good blend of textures – soft radish pieces, chewy egg and crunchy chye poh.

Opens: 6am to 8.30pm daily. Closed on Mondays.

Price: $2.50 (black or white)

Yan Seng
Tekka Market and Food Centre, #01-319

This stall had its humble beginnings on the streets of Lim Tua Tow Road back in the 50s and 60s. Mr Tan Geh Hiong, 53, inherited his mother’s business in 1979 and has not looked back since. He is fussy about his choice of ingredients – only quality sweet soy sauce will do. The black version of the carrot cake is fragrant with plenty of chye poh (salted radish) and is served with plenty of chopped scallion.

Opens: 7am to 5pm daily. Closed on Mondays.

Price: $2.50 (black)

Ming Ji Shu Shi
85 Bedok North Street 4, Fengshan Market and Food Centre, #01-206

This is a slightly oilier carrot cake which is not too salty, and very generous with the egg. The owner takes care not to chop away too much at the ingredients, so you get hearty, firm chunks.

Opens: 5.15am to 1pm daily. Closed on Sundays.

Price: $2/2.50/3 (black or white)

Guan Kee
2 Changi Village Road, Changi Village Food Centre, #01-02

This stall is special for its home-made carrot cake, which is steamed in-house. The owner learnt the trade from a master chef six years ago. He was previously selling chicken rice. What a happy switch this must be for his customers. They get a carrot cake that’s full of the taste of radish, lavished with egg.

Opens: 11am to 11pm daily. Closed on Mondays.

Price: $2.50/3.50 (black or white)

Fried carrot cake is one of my favorite Singapore Chinese food, the white version. Johor food can't make it, if that's what you mean by across the causeway. Malacca and Penang are good though.

Sinkie food is getting suckier, because more Ah Tiongs and franchisees/mercenaries are setting up hawker stalls. There is no family recipe, no attention to detail and definitely no pride. A similar phenomenon is happening with barbers.

Food represent culture of a place and grows with it.. That is why Forvendet mentioned that Malacca and Penang food is good, the food grows with the people.

This kind of thing cannot be copied, humans can feel it.

Your own govt has destroyed everything, including the culture of sinkieland.. well.. the only thing that they didn't destroy is the cowardice of the sinkies. So sad...

The PAP needs the cowardice of sinkies to keep them in power. The more coward a sinkie is, the longer PAP is in power...That is a fact!!!

There used to be a carrot cake stall at the transit centre next to High Street Centre. They use small shrimps as one of the ingredients. Don't know where it has gone to and couldn't find another stall that cook this way.

Is this organize by Citygas? Then forget about the reviews. Read and tried many and most failed. Some do make it. Taxi drivers are better in this.
