中山高苗栗縣三義路段昨天發生賓士靈車火燒車意外，熊熊烈火將靈車車頭和前半部燒得面目全非，幸好送殯家屬及法師在靈車起火前已早一步下車，並將棺木和死者遺照搬到護欄上，逃過一劫，但對葬儀公司老舊靈車卻仍上路頗為不滿。
往生者家屬表示，往生者十三日在北二高香山路段發生翻車意外身亡，家人昨日替他辦理告別式，由葬儀社安排黑色賓士靈車準備將遺體運往台中市大甲火葬場火化，十時許行經中山高南下一四五公里處車輛冒煙，家屬要靈車駕駛將車停路肩，大夥下車趕忙將棺木和遺照搬到護欄上，不一會兒靈車便起火燃燒。
靈車上除六十一歲的古姓駕駛還有五名往生者家屬與法師，家屬氣憤說，從苗栗交流道上高速公路時就看到駕駛座在冒煙，路上不斷要求駕駛停車，但對方仍堅持繼續開，行經三義路段時冒煙越來越嚴重，駕駛才把車停到路肩，沒多久隨即起火燃燒，還發出爆裂聲響。
消防隊趕赴現場救火，此時靈車車頭已陷入火海，陣陣黑煙直竄天際，十餘分鐘後火勢才熄滅，車頭和車身前半部付之一炬，禮儀社隨即調派廂型車接駁棺木和家屬繼續南下。
國道警方初步調查，懷疑靈車可能因車齡老舊，造成機械引擎故障起火，確切原因仍需進一步調查。苗栗監理站長張錦坤表示，近幾年靈車為求氣派多使用改裝進口轎車，車齡多半超過十年以上，較易發生機械故障等問題。
