Toddler dies from too much drink, dad jailed

A TWO-YEAR-OLD child died of alcohol intoxication after drinking excessively with his father in China, reported Sin Chew Daily.

Known only as Yuan Yuan, the boy’s father had taken him to a gathering in Panzhihua, Sichuan province, in April.

The father met two of his friends at the restaurant where Yuan Yuan apparently consumed some 100ml of Chinese wine before passing out.

The cause of his death was due to acute respiratory failure, which was a result of alcohol intoxication.

On Wednesday, a court found the three adults guilty of negligence and sentenced them to separate jail terms of between two and three years.

> Nanyang Siang Pau reported that working women in the Guangdong province of China would probably be granted a day of menstrual leave every month if the planned Regulations on Labour Protection of Female Workers is approved by the authorities.

The provincial government was seeking public views on this policy, which allows women to take sick leave – provided they had a medical certificate from a doctor.

This proposed law generated much discussion on social media, with many doubting its feasibility.

At present, women with severe menstrual pain are granted up to two days of medical leave each month under the Female Worker Healthcare Provisions 1993, but this was not normally practised.

> Major Chinese dailies reported that three brothers from a prominent family in Taiwan were killed during a major feud over the family’s multi-billion business empire.

The brothers, who were in their 50s, were from the Huang family that owns a major meat distribution company and a business group that is involved in the hotel and retail industries.

The deaths took place on Thursday at their company’s headquarters in Taipei where six brothers had gathered to discuss the inheritance left by their late father, tycoon Huang Jung-tu, who died in 2001.

A heated quarrel broke out between them with the fourth brother Ming-te whipping out a pistol and firing at his elder brothers Ming-huang and Ming-jen.

Ming-te later shot himself before jumping off the seven-storey building.

Prior to this, there had been numerous lawsuits between the brothers as well as their step-siblings from their father’s mistress.
