MPS lasted past midnight just now. Very appreciative of a resident, Mr Lam (the gentleman next to me in the photo), who brought me a bag of Doritos chips and a can of coke. I asked to share the chips with my team of volunteers, who also volunteered till late. Thank you, Mr Lam!

Mr Lam had accompanied his friend to my weekly MPS. His friend is not in good health. Mr Lam has put in much time helping his friend with his housing needs and making sure that he sticks to his medication regime. He even escorted his friend home after I crafted a letter of appeal for the latter. Mr Lam could have spent his evening doing his own things, but he chose to help his friend. Gracious of him and kudos to him!

I am glad that leaders are calling on fellow Singaporeans to show support for eldercare facilities. In an earlier FB post, I had also discussed this need. With a low TFR, the number of childless and single elderly will increase. This emergi
ng trend can already be observed in several parts of Singapore, especially in mature estates, and we need to start gearing up for an older population in time to come (Singapore is projected to have 1 in 5 Singaporeans being 65 years old and above by 2030).

It is therefore important to build up community support and care services for the future. This means making our neighbourhoods more elderly-friendly, as well as equipping them with vital services such as elderly day care centres and nursing homes. All these will require careful and thorough preparation by the government as well as strong support from VWOs and the community. Community support is especially critical for locating such facilities and services in our midst. This is a sign of respect and embracement of our elderly.

With careful planning and all-round support, I believe we can move towards the ideal of an inclusive Singapore and letting Singaporeans “age in place”, in familiar neighbourhoods, surrounded by their friends and families.
