A manager at Singapore’s Changi Airport was sentenced to 3.5 years jail yesterday (October 24).
Lim Guan Tee, a manager at Sats subsidiary, Asia-Pacific Star (APS), embezzled S$476,682 over a three month period from July 9 to October 10, 2014.
As the second overall-in-charge of operations at Changi Airport, the 61-year-old managed the lost and found office, where he had access to cash from the daily sales at the Tiger Airways counter.
His job also required him to reconcile differences between recorded cash sales and actual cash collected at the sales desk.
Lim had used the money he stole to gamble and repay his loans.
Lim would sometimes tell the sales desk agents that he was taking bags of cash from the counter to store them in the safe in the lost and found office.
Counter staff said they handed the bags over as they viewed him as their superior.
Lim had also instructed supervisors on duty in the lost and found office to give the polymer bags of cash from front office directly to him. They were then told not to record these bags in the summary list.
Lim surrendered to the Commercial Affairs Department on October 16, 2014. Only S$12 was left of the money he had taken.
He had worked at Sats since 1976 before being transferred to APS in 2009.
