A large proportion of Chinese citizens directly invest in its stock markets compared with the West, where professional institutional investors dominate, so there is much direct exposure to average citizens with little knowledge of the whims of the market.

“Mom-and-pop investors are the backbone of trading in China’s domestic A-shares market, so the miserable performance of the last two years is probably pushing trading volumes to very low levels,” said Doug Young, director of Hong Kong-based Bamboo Works, which analyzes listed Chinese companies. “A-shares” refers to Chinese firms trading on the mainland bourses in Shanghai or Shenzhen.

For families across China preparing for Lunar New Year, the most important celebration in the calendar, pork is a must. An ingredient synonymous with prosperity and abundance, it’s used in countless dishes and cured for festive delicacies.

But in Beijing’s Xinmin market, vendor Wu Aizhen is struggling. Though pork prices have fallen by about a fifth compared to a year ago, she is selling a third less than she would in a normal holiday season.

Pork consumption apparently clearly hasn’t kept up with supply since China reopened last year, despite a surge in people eating out again,” said Duncan Wrigley, chief China economist at consultancy Pantheon Macroeconomics. While good data is scarce, he added, farmers have ramped up production in response to swine fever losses and large-scale operations have taken up a greater share of the market.

China accounts for almost half of global pork consumption and hog production, eating five times more of the meat than the United States every year. But last year, consumption fell by 1 million tons to roughly 54 million, according to consultancy Shanghai JCI. While not dramatic, it’s a significant drop at a time when families were supposed to be spending and entertaining again, and production has dramatically increased.

It’s adding to China’s worrying deflation picture. Food makes up a fifth of the consumer price index and pork, in turn, is a large component. Consumer prices fell in December for a third straight month and the declines look likely to extend into 2024.

China has tons of USD. But they refused to use their reserve to rescue the economy. Real estate in bad bad shape. Bank can't do any thing, if bank rescue these real estate company. They will be in trouble too. The problem is interlink and interlock. But if you don't rescue this indebted real company, what is going to happen to your real estate industry? People has negative assets. People aren't spending. If people aren't spending, The economy will not be back in the normal again. The chain got choked. It becomes a dead paddle of water.

On The other hand, US is doing okay for now. How f****** US is indebted, The US is still far much more transparent and trustable than China PRC government.

How come China never ask Russia, South Africa, Brazil and India to help ?
These people are poor country by standard. Russia is in war. India is busy doing up the economy. Brazil and South Africa is not doing well either They are depending on Big brother China to hand them the cash.

BRIC Is a market whereby country are poor and they do not have spending power. China just want to export their stuff and they do not want people to sell their products in China.

How to do business like that? You want to earn money but you refuse others chance to earn money In your market.
