WP Concededs Parliamentary Majority To PAP! Game Over! Admit PAP Is Betterer!

WP's best of both worlds strategy: Vote for the strongest opposition party without losing the People's Action Party (PAP) as the government.

Belmont Lay

workers-party-ge2015.jpg

The Workers’ Party (WP) will contest a total of 28 seats in the upcoming General Election: 5 Group Representation Constituencies and 5 Single Member Constituencies.

WP chairwoman Sylvia Lim told Channel News Asia on Sunday, July 26, 2015, they are going to field 28 candidates in total.

The 5 GRCs they will contest are Aljunied, Marine Parade, East Coast, Jalan Besar and Nee Soon.

Aljunied, Marine Parade, Nee Soon are five-member GRCs, while East Coast and Jalan Besar are four-member GRCs.

The 5 SMCs which they will compete in are Hougang, Punggol East, Fengshan, MacPherson and Sengkang West.

WP’s strategy is also echoed by NCMP Gerald Giam on his Facebook:

In GE2011 four years ago, they fielded 23 candidates in 4 GRCs: Aljunied, East Coast, Nee Soon and now defunct Moumein-Kallang, and 4 SMCs: Hougang, Punggol East, Sengkang West and Joo Chiat, which has been wiped off the map by the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee.

What the announcement means:

Lim’s announcement is seen as sending a strong signal to the other opposition parties, who have said they would be meeting to talk about avoid contesting in the same wards to prevent multi-cornered fights.

More importantly, WP is sending a “by-election effect” signal to the electorate — vote for the strongest opposition party in Singapore and one does not risk losing the People’s Action Party (PAP) as the government.

This is because WP will need to contest in at least 45 seats in order to be Singapore’s ruling party.

Re: WP can form a shadow cabinet with around 28 seats

28 WP MPs can form a front bench cabinet with one MP debating with the Ministers in each other Ministry. Even if WP gets less than 28, say a rock both of 8 or 10, these MPs can still divide the workload with one MP taking on 2 ministries or so.

WTF is a shadow government? They sit around and daydream they are running ministries? How old already, still playing like kids?

They are better off masturbating instead of being some nonsensical shadow government.

That is a brilliant move. Those middle voters will be happily voting for WP, without the worry of a change in Government.

They are smart to take over gradually.

It won't happen. Years ago, opposition purposely contested in less than half of all the parliamentary seats. They were hoping that by allowing PAP to win more than 50% of the seats by walkover and form the government on Nomination Day, the remaining voters will have the balls to vote opposition in. In the end, the opposition still lost in nearly every single seat. This scenario will repeat itself.

Vast majority of sinkie voters have been wired by PAP. They will not take chances and change ruling parties as frequently as what you see in Australia or Europe. Majority of them will continue to vote for PAP, regardless of how much they hate PAP. They rather stick with the familiar than to take any form of risk.

I was hoping for WP to contest in more than just 28 seats, which is slightly more than what they contested in the previous time. It's frankly quite disappointing. Parties like SDA, Sinkies First, RP and NSP have virtually zero chance of winning. My grassroots duty during rally period can reduce liao. In a way, my grassroots buddies and I are happy. We got more free evenings to go drink beer.

A shadow cabinet is possible if the Opps have a tad too many shadowy characters in the team.

Dun be a gong chee bye. WP is trying to emulate the Punggol East by election model.

If all Opposition parties follow WP and bring in the By Election effect, then for sure PAP will lose jialat jialat.

Voters are more informed today and WP has better candidates today than ever before. I have a good feeling about the outcome.

To most voters, there are only two credible parties: PAP and WP.

SDP trails WP by a large margin. Most swing voters would only vote opposition if it was WP. It would take a lot for the average swing voter to vote for SDP.

Other than hardcore opposition, most swing voters would not vote for any of the other opposition parties. They have no idea and no confidence of the ability of the other opposition parties. Nicole Seah was a rare exception. She singlehandedly raised the NSP profile during her brief stint in politics. She is now gone, and most likely a PAP supporter now. To most voters, an opposition MP is a lame duck MP. He will be ringfenced and surrounded by so many grassroots and CCC members, that he will be as impotent as a eunuch. Think of Ling How Dong, Cheo Chai Chen and you get the idea. It would be more effective to approach the PAP person for help. So, might as well vote for PAP instead.

You opposition are farked!

Re: WP Concededs Parliamentary Majority To PAP! Game Over! Admit PAP Is Betterer!

It is amazing how the ruling party with all its resources and the one holding the entire pack of cards has allowed an opposition party to have taken the initiative AND the sting of the likely much worn out strategy of saying that investors are looking at how SGs vote, at how other govts will wait for the results before deciding on certain agreements, and the dangers of a party who cannot even manage a town council.

For all its resources, it has not been able to issue one "master" statement of how the govt will approach the elections and that they have one and only one objective - to continue serving the people of SG for the next five years. There does not seem to be a master strategic plan yet, with the MPs (based on their comments in the media) talking their heads off, as headless chickens do. All the chairman was able to muster is that everything will be in place.

Even the ministers don't know what is going on - with one of them even saying that ONE man will decide everything. Hence, we have a DPM who talks cock about there not being any gerrymandering notwithstanding that the ST has been running comments by analysts. There is total silence from the other DPM.

We then have one minister in the PM's office (who has never spent one single day in a commercial enterprise) giving advice to displaced PMEs that they should take flight, learn and then come back. In the meantime, they encourage the hiring of third world PMEs with dubious degrees to learn in our own land.

Another minister (former Mom's boy scout) classified a much talked about (and now serious police case) the matter of a daughter and her boyfriend abusing her mother as being a trial by media, that it was a family matter, that we should give them space to breathe.

The deafening silence of the other big guns announces that even the ministers themselves don't know who is coming, going, jumping or standing still. There has been no big talk of tea party invitations to meet prospective people who want to "serve" the people. The MIWs do seem to be in disarray. Opportunity lost.

The thunder has been stolen - by the WP - they have planted their flags, and will take on all comers.

WP to contest for 28 seats in GE. SGs to Unite & Vote All of Them into Parliament!

[h=1]Workers’ Party to contest for 28 seats in coming GE[/h]admin / 3 hours ago July 26, 2015

Singapore’s biggest Opposition Party, the Workers’ Party, will be contesting for 28 seats in the coming General Election, announced its Chairman MP for Aljunied GRC Sylvia Lim.

Photo of WP supporters by Jason Quah

These 28 seats consist of 5 GRCs and 5 SMCs as follow:

Aljunied GRC – 5 seats

Marine Parade GRC – 5 seats

East Coast GRC – 4 seats

Jalan Besar GRC – 4 seats

Nee Soon GRC – 5 seats

Hougang SMC – 1 seat

Punggol East SMC – 1 seat

Fengshan SMC – 1 seat

MacPherson SMC – 1 seat

Sengkang West SMC – 1 seat

The Workers’ Party made this announcement to better prepare other Opposition Parties so everyone could avoid 3-corner fights in these areas. Various multi-corner fights have proven the Workers’ Party as the sole winner in the 2 elections, namely Punggol-East SMC General Election in 2011 and Punggol East SMC By-election in 2013.

Singaporeans’ preferred choice of Opposition is the Workers’ Party, which have also consistently gained the most votes among all Opposition parties over the past 24 years. Winning 28 seats this coming General Election however will not propel the Workers’ Party to be the next Singapore Government if the ruling PAP continues to dominate more than 28 seats.

The Workers’ Party has been a victim of political slandering with various heavyweight Ministers like K Shanmugam (Nee Soon GRC), Lawrence Wong (West Coast GRC) and Khaw Boon Wan (Sembawang GRC) repeatedly accusing the Opposition Party of mismanagement of their Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol-East Town Council. The Ministry of National Development have even withheld more than S$1.5 million of Town Council funding for the Opposition’s Town Council despite requests by the Singapore Court and High Court to release the funds.

Singaporeans are however understanding of the political situation of the Opposition party in Singapore and have continued to boast record rally numbers in every elections held by the Workers’ Party.

JUST IN: Sylvia Lim says Workers' Party plans to contest in 5 SMCs and 5 GRCs in the coming General Elections - a total number of 28 seats.

With all due respect to WP, this is a tad too ambitious. Sinkies are not daft to vote for the WP in all the 28 seats contested.

This year is the year of the Jubilee. Many sinkies especially the pioneers are being recognised for their contributions to the nation with pioneer package and freebies. The GE will come after the SG50 celebrations where nationalist fever and goodwill for the government will be at its peak. Moreover, LKY's contributions for Singapore still factor large in many sinkie ( both young and old ) minds and consciences.

It will be a better strategy for WP to play defensive in this coming GE.

Smart of WP to come out first and say where they are contesting.
Now if any other oppo wants to contest in the same area, they are the ones starting the 3 corner fights.

this is the sign of a growing, credible and organised party......
(oops I hope my master do not see this post or I will be in trouble for saying WP is a credible party)

me strongly feel that WP should concentrate on the GRC as this has more significance and impact .... LTK/PS should lead the WP assault on East Coast or Nee Soon
