Life and death of what??

If we don't have a mature democratic platform, shouldn't the Opposition aspire to achieve that instead of just aiming for ONE GRC??

The significance of having PAP losing one or more GRCs is too huge to be underestimated.

The GRC system is designed in such a way to preserve PAP's monopoly of power and it has worked as the last PAP Fortress. The other alternative would be more votes for some (as suggested by LKY before) or just do away with elections and declare monarchy or dictatorship.

The GRC system has made PAP ministers and MPs to have lesser sense of accountability to voters and Singaporeans at large. And the GRC provides the comfort of a sanctuary of power without having to face the voters directly. i.e. many PAP MPs do not need to put up a fight in order to get into parliament. It has become so absurd that many PAP MPs would just pray that opposition parties do not contest in their wards just before nomination day.

For those "unlucky ones" who are being contested, you could sense their unhappiness throughout the process. PAP candidates are becoming "weaklings" under the GRC system and I would not be surprised that many of them would have lost the art of basic political engagement as in political electoral fights.

If you are talking about getting rid of PAP by winning 1 or 2 GRCs, then that is impossible to achieve. But it has to start somewhere. And the fact is that if even the fortress GRC could fall, it would mean that there is no hiding place for those PAP MPs and ministers who keep thinking that they could just ignore public sentiments and voices on the ground. They would have to be more accountable to their electorates.

In another words, all PAP MPs and ministers who taught that they could get away with what they do or say without accountable to Singaporeans would be peeing in their pants if there are indeed 1 or 2 GRCs lost to opposition.

Accountability is what we sort for in a democratic political system. Winning the first GRC from PAP would be the first step in achieving that. If PAP still ignore the will and voices of Singaporeans, it will eventually lose power in subsequent elections. But the most important thing is to deprive them the two third majority straight away during next elections, so that they could not change the electoral rules and constitutions to protect their monopoly of power.

Goh Meng Seng

After so many years, I finally see you write something in an enlightened manner.

To beat the enemy is to know the enemy. In this case, I dare say many in the opposition as well as the general public still have alot to understand PAP in order to beat them.

Willl CST and KJ really come togather If its so, then it could be one of the biggest political happening for the opposition since Cheng San. But lets be realistic and stop coming up with theories and crap. Its not hard to win a GRC, just how would be the better question.

have we got the formula yet?

Chiam and Philip both eat potato type, they need a cheena hero like Low Thia Kiang to win the elections.

Chiam has good charisma and it was due to his popularity that 4 or 5 seats were won in 1991; candidates like Cheo Chai Chen and Ling How Doong practically rode to victory on his back. However he is now old and losing sharpness.

It is more like a team of no hope:

1. RP to join SDA and Chiam to cede his position as head of SDA to Jeyaretnam. Chiam to retire due to personal reasons. Anyway, Potong Pasir to absorb into a GRC as the number of residents are below the minimum required of a single ward;
2. SPP and SJP to dissolve and absorb by RP;
3. PKMS to remain independent within SDA;
4. NSP to rejoin;
5. SDP to be bankrupted and dissolved;
6. an Indian party to form, offspring of defunct SDP;
7. Tan KL has no political ambition and would front a consumer rights body (as predicted correctly). Goh MS quits NSP to deputise Tan. Leong too has no political ambition;
8. Jeyaretnam to win a single ward seat;
9. Chia TL to win a seat as an independent with support from ex-SDP members; and
10. WP to finally join SDA following a party coup after performing very badly at the ballot box. Low declined the NCMP position. Lim failed to clinch one.

Defeating PAP concerns the life and death of you and me lah.And every local sundry too.Like your life is overrun by foreigners and your children's future denied over lack of job opptunities and seats in higher education while having to serve NS lah.Death--because now PAP tells you to go and die elsewhere since it cannot accommodate you when you are old while locking all your CIF money lah..Not to mention the slow and painful death as living corpse here without any welfare while the PAP feed themselves millions with our money lah.

The onus & burden to aspire for a democratic platform solely falls on the shoulders of the oppositions you say?----You ought to read my post again,here.. .http://www.sammyboy.com/showthread.php?t=18425

Here are some of the excerpts...."Its an open secret that the elections are never fair in Singapore.Why?Because PAP sets the rules and opposition simply cannot play by PAP rules and hope to win .So the route to parliament for oppositions via elections remain closed.Or till LKY dies ; at least that's what many posters in this forum touts."

I heard that the Chinese evening papers Wanbao has reported about Chiam ST and Kenneth JB are joining up to form a team to contest in next GE!

That would be a Team of Hope! Finally we see some possibility of breaking PAP's last fortress...the GRC!

Goh Meng Seng

gms, personally i think that should be what as many small and seldom heard of opp parties should do. they should ally with other opp parties and combine into one stronger opp force.

this theory is based on a simple example of one chopstick is easier to break than a bundle of it.

however, understanding the type of opp personnel calibre and characters, it would be quite a uphill task. beside that, there is always the sdp troll (who has not really confirmed her SDP MEMBER status) who is still out in full force to sow discords amongst the opps and firing away her deadly F&D antics.

such dubious characters aggravate the unification of opps parties. fragmentation is one of the major failure for most opp parties to fail to win wards. citizens can see clearly that if the opp members themselves cannot even agree on simple motive or agenda, how can they take of their ward? how can they even tackle head on with the formidable paps?

the other fallback is the over-estimation of one's ability. opp members political wannabe over pride and over rate themselves to some kind of "grassroots heroes". really, if u observe their behaviour, their speech and their usual mannerism, they are more like lau heeloos that rant the most but rumble the least exactly like loud thunder but no rain drop.

if opp political wannabes still refuse to take stock about themselves and the capability they really possess, they shall lose again in the next GE. if they cannot relate to the ground, convince the voters and really talk logical and rational senses, they are nothing but making a fools about themselves. in another, beside sdp clowns, there are even more clowns.

what we need now is an "OPPOSITION SAVIOUR" something like a SILVER SURFER to appear to lead all u opp guys. who will that be.....sadly, he hasn't appeared yet.:(

sdp is best known for their unexplained warped ARROGANCE which they cunningly gift-wrapped it into "patriotism" and tied with a ribbon of "the highest level".

they are so bloody arrogance that they even think they write the laws and are fully above it.

if u think PAPS manifest such characteristics, the sdp should be even prouder as being the continuous loser, their mindset has always remained that stubborn, arrogant, quarrelsome and imbecilely detached,
