SINGAPORE — The first population-based national study on the mental health literacy of Singaporeans is being conducted to better understand the perceptions and attitudes towards mental illnesses. The study is being conducted by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) and started in June last year.
Associate Professor Chong Siow Ann, the Vice Chairman of the Medical Board (Research) at IMH and who is leading the study, said the study comes after significant gaps in the treatment of mental conditions were identified from their earlier study on mental health.
“Critical information such as gender, education, religion, ethnicity, person experience of mental illness etc and how they would impact and shape mental health knowledge and attitudes are also unknown,” he said.
The research team then hopes that results from the two-year study will encourage the early recognition of mental illnesses and their treatment and also lead to more targeted and focused public education programmes on mental health.
The S$1 million study — funded by the Ministry of Health — will survey 3,000 randomly selected Singapore residents, aged between 18 and 65 years old.
Interviewers will randomly narrate a short description on one of the five mental disorders identified by the research team to assess their understanding of the particular mental condition. The study will also include questionnaires on the participant’s attitudes towards people with mental illness and towards seeking professional psychological help.
