Iodine is an important substance when it comes to cancer prevention. Iodine treatment has been used to help with a lot of different health problems including breast cancer, thyroid issues and even syphilis over the years. Iodine can be eaten as seaweed and in some instances is added to breads. This problem began because back in 1948 it was believed to be dangerous and removed from medicines and food.

Harmful chemicals

When it was thought that iodine was a harmful substance it was removed from bread and an iodine-blocking element called bromine was added to flour, our mattresses to make them more fireproof, to our clothes and many other products. Other harmful chemicals such as pesticides and food additives were added to our foods. These interfere further with iodine absorption making deficiencies worse. Xenoestrogens are chemical oestrogens found in personal and home care products as well as in air pollution which poison the body and add to hormone imbalances.

Realising its importance at a later date scientific studies agreed it was safe to be ingested in small amounts and remain in such substances as iodized salt. However it still remained out of our diet since we were told to reduce sodium intake due to its impact on blood pressure and heart disease so many people did not get even the iron that was added to the salt either. Salt also evaporates with moisture, storage, and exposure to oxygen making the ingestion of iodine minimal. Another factor to consider is that when iodine is added to salt, including potassium iodide, it includes an anti-caking agent, which a healthy option.

Iodine is a necessity for good thyroid health and for tissues such as the breasts, the pancreas, the stomach and the brain which require larger amounts of iron. Given all of the above iodine consumption has dropped whilst thyroid issues and breast and prostate cancers have increased. Studies have found that iodine deficiency can increase the risk of cancer, but can also cause complications during pregnancy and in the baby’s development.

Iodine Deficiency and Cancer

Some studies in Europe have shown that deficiencies of iodine may lead to many cancers because iodine decreases estrogen-responsive genes. The problem is that with low iodine estrogen levels increase. When estrogen levels grow it inhibits iodine absorption leading to iodine deficiency which could lead to breasts carcinogens promoting tumour growth.
On the other hand while iodine has been found to be beneficial to improving thyroid function, immune function, and the optimal functioning of all cells. It is also involved in cell death and the way genes work in breast and stomach cancer cells. It assists in helping create a healthy immune system and to regulate cortisol hormones which are involved in our sleep and stress levels.

Iodine testing

The symptoms of iodine deficiency vary and iodine testing is not normally part of a routine medical exam. A random urine is a good start. Also, you can do an iodine patch test which involves painting a two-inch square of iodine on your body and see how long the orange square takes to fade. The problem is that the test is not completely reliable or conclusive. However, it can help give a general idea as to how deficient you are in iodine.
It is important to talk to your naturopath or natural therapist about your iodine levels particularly if you have hormonal or thyroid issues. Having said this though please do not self-medicate by buying iodine over the counter as taking iodine when it’s not necessary can cause great imbalances in your body and in some cases even harm. This clinic tests your inflammation levels and advises what supplements to best take for your health. Give us a call today.
