The Likely Causes of the December 8/13 Riot In Little India, Singapore

The 8.12.13 Incident will go down into the history of Singapore and annals of the Singapore Police Force as an incident that could have been avoided and or properly handled.

Besides creating misunderstanding between India, Bangladesh and Singapore, it would also pose a security-threat to peace-loving Singaporeans.

The forthcoming ban on alcohol better be fairly pursued with City Plaza, Lucky Plaza and Chinatown being included, or for that matter any other area where these workers congregate on Sundays and Public Holidays.

The Indian and Bangladesh Governments both owes the people and government of Singapore an explanation.

We employ their nationals here because these people cannot find a decent paying job in their countries and in Pakistan, Nigeria and other South Asian nations.

The massive corruption, open nepotism and clear-cut cronyism is a disease that is full blown in these countries. The ruling parties are only interested in their own survival, that of their kids, and molly-coddlers and hence leave their people there with no choice but to leave their so-called "liberated nations" for other shores in search of a living.

Hence these newcomers here bring along with them their social baggage. All these years since the British left India and former east Pakistan (now Bangladesh), the Congress Party in India or for that matter the National Awami League of the late Mujibur Rahman has also not live up to the expectations. Nehru quickly went into corruption and so did the families of Mujibur and Zia-Ur Rahman, respectively. Pakistan has been cursed from the day it was created. Religious fundamentalism is high there.

Go into Serangoon Road or step into the many Bollywood style singing clubs there and you will find scores of Bangladeshis, Indians, Pakistanis and even Nigerians throwing lots of money on the scantily-clad girls. Some of these people will "throw" thousands of dollars within a night. These are modern-day prostitutes in Singapore. Any copper will know that these is the gathering of "mafia", who brong dirty money here to cleanse it. Their fronts are mini-marts, sleazy pubs and other small time joints like restaurants, etc... Why are licences to such foreigners so easily given? OC of Anti-Vice should help Singaporeans.

Where did that money came from?. Could it be that these shady characters may be the agents that brought these poor workers here to work under slavish conditions. They could be the psychological factor bothering these poor people - repayment of loans taken. Being in such an impoverished state of mind lead them to drink till they are drunk to forget their problems. Why not charge these foreign "towkay" big bosses as suspects ala Ah Long San and His Gang?

Is it not possible for these people who spend lavishly to also use their dirty money to incite further troubles in Singapore. They can be potential "bankers" to incite trouble. It is just a guess but can be very dangerous situation here. Why isn't the ISD (INTERNAL SECURITY is their field) trail these people and their cronies here.

The recent local TV interviews (post riot) also show that majority of the liquour sellers, supermart an eateries owners are Indians, Bangladeshis and others and NOT Singaporeans. Where did this people get so much of money to set up business and pay atrociously high rentals per month, not forgetting the liquour and cigarette incences?. Something is terribly wrong here, for these people may be bringing in "dirty money" from their corrupted relatives friends and cronies to deposit in Singapore as capital for "bona-fide business establishments". CID should look into this if the CAD is not the one to do so.

I have not heard of any neighbouring country allowing such small timers to set up shop. Why are we so liberal. I am keeping lot of these in wraps for I am writing a book on these.

Coming to the the riot on that fateful night.... let us not not be judgemental and blame anyone for these is speculation. Speculation can make one bankrupt just like the Singapore Turf Club , Stock Exchange and Singapore Pools.

I believe that the two officers from the NPP who first to responded to the call of a fatal accident did not know the seriousness of the case that they were about to handle. All they knew was that it was a fatal accident. The operators at 999 centre should write exactly what the the callers say, possess the intelligence to get more info and then despatch the car to the scene. Do not make the poor officers sitting ducks.

Looking at the police message from the caller that was stated in the newspaper report, one can clearly see that the words are that of the operators at 999 and not the callers. Very stereotype indeed...

The Board of Inquiry should hear out the actual conversation from the taped messages at the 999 centre. They members will be shell-shocked too upon learning the truth. Imagine sending out such stereotype messages and leading the men to their doom. The officers at 999 Centre responsible for writing that police message form should be taken to task and kept away from fat annual bonuses and liberal promotions. The police should periodically check these. Such cases can even go to the Highest Court. Surely, it would reflect badly on the Minister of Home Affairs, the SPF as an organisation and the officers at the centre of the problem. If the the message was properly heard and recorded, it would have provided a better picture to the two officers attending the case. More reinforcements could have been sent to the scene as back-up. Getting better and accurate details today is not a problem for the 999 centre as all calls are identified.

The Board of Inquiry (I don't like the name Committe of Inquiry) or BOI should also check with the statements of the suspects and witnesses and confirm as to whether the time-keeper, driver of bus or responding police officers could have muttered anything on race, colour, creed or "mannerisms" of the people that could have ignited the matter to such a large scale. No one in a proper sense would want to damage police cars and ambulances for these vehicles are for the good of the people, including the rioters. Giving excuses like the "shields" could have angered the rioters is just like saying that armed policemen are not a sight the public would like to see...Surely something has gone wrong that led to such a violent outbursts. I am not suggesting but this is a possible scenario and must be looked into to once and for all put an end to such un-called for remarks.

While driving into a neighbouring country I have seen and even heard their policemen condemning and critisicising race and religion. It is a powder-keg waiting to ignite. Hope the same would not be of our police officers. The Police Training Department should instill into all officers the seriousness of such un-called for remarks. Honestly, it is a very common behaviour nowadays and days gone past, for policemen and operators receiving calls to classify a group of Chinese gathering as gamblers, Malays as drug addicts and Indians as "drunkards". Could these have been the case that led to the massive outburst? No one knows..

The SSIB and the SOC should also be out doing the jobs like gathering information and patrolling the streets in full gear. Desker Road is filled with gangs of Bangladeshis. The so-called pai-kias of the old era seems to have surrendered their turf to Bangladeshis. HDB estates are controlled by Bangladesh sweepers. They allow karang-gunis and car-washers. If this is not a strong-arm tactic, what other words can we use? Give an inch and they seek a yard. Allow them to climb on your head and they won't hesitate to urinate or defeacate on it.

These are facts that the government should look into.

Sadly, the COI will not investigate how the top brass in the SPF screwed up.

The top brass denied permission to the officers on scene to fire warning shots when the crowd started to get unruly. Helicopters could have been sent over to help out. But they did not. Instead the riot squad was called in much later. A preventable situation was allowed to deteriorate into a riot.

I doubt the COI will punish the SPF top brass for this clear public showing of incompetence.
