There was an oil slick reported, which is not good news. Could have only come from an implosion of the hull
Yes, a torpedo could have been handled wrongly or even misfired in the tube. Or maybe a bulkhead and hull structure cracked due to depth pressure and lack of maintenance.

Just thinking about this. Super cold down in that depth, if the pressure hasn't already crushed the hull like a soda can. Now oxygen running out. Submariners live dangerously, especially when serving onboard an old sub.
There is a plan to convert this thermal difference between bottom cold snd top warmth into clean energy.

JAKARTA — Indonesia's navy is searching for 53 people on board a missing submarine and is seeking help from Australia and Singapore, the country's military chief told Reuters on Wednesday (April 21).

The German-made submarine, KRI Nanggala-402, was conducting a torpedo drill in waters north of the island of Bali on Wednesday but failed to relay the results as expected, a navy spokesman said.

Representatives of the defence departments of Australia and Singapore did not immediately respond to requests for comment. REUTERS

BALI (AFP, XINHUA) - The missing Indonesian submarine has been found and all the crew members on board perished, the Indonesian authorities said on Sunday (April 25).

The wreckage of the missing vessel was located on the sea floor off Bali island, Indonesian Military Chief Hadi Tjahjanto and Navy Chief of Staff Yudo Margono said.

Search-and-rescue efforts for the submarine with 53 crew members had gone on for days, with the Indonesian Armed Forces announcing on Saturday that they had found debris believed to be from the vessel.

The submarine was taking part in torpedo-firing drill off Bali on Wednesday when it dove and lost contact.

Assets from foreign countries have been deployed to help with the search-and-rescue efforts, including from Singapore, Malaysia and the United States.

Not surprised that all died. RIP indon submariners.

The pressure from the depth caused the hull to break into three pieces.
