Religion has never done any good for society. It's helpful for an individual to organise his life and provides discipline and hope in times of despair but absolutely useless and even harmful when it goes beyond an individual and out to society. Nearly every conflict started has religion playing a major part.

Pro- family is driven by mid west Bible Belt nut jobs who on the quiet are screwing their sisters but that seems ok.

You can say screwing sisters is pro family . Really.

But yeah, religion at the national level is bad because politicians will always hijack it for their own ends.
And if you 're thinking Islam, I think GW Bush did the same.

Atheists suffer from a horrible mental disease. Their motives are guided by questionable premises, their actions answerable to no one but themselves. We have witnessed injustice and attrocities committed in the name of self interest and hedonism. A rule of law guided by these premises cannot be the way.

There are secular codes of ethics and morality which in many ways are more humane than religious morality. Secular ethics base their principles on reason, free inquiry and education to achieve the greater good for humanity's well-being and survival, without recourse to a God(s) or scriptures. Secular humanism is an example.

Question: "What is secular humanism?"

Answer:
The ideal of secular humanism is mankind itself as a part of uncreated, eternal nature; its goal is man’s self-remediation without reference to or help from God. Secular humanism grew out of the 18th century Enlightenment and 19th century freethinking. Some Christians might be surprised to learn that they actually share some commitments with secular humanists. Many Christian and secular humanists share a commitment to reason, free inquiry, the separation of church and state, the ideal of freedom, and moral education; however, they differ in many areas. Secular humanists base their morality and ideas about justice on critical intelligence unaided by Scripture, which Christians rely on for knowledge concerning right and wrong, good and evil. And although secular humanists and Christians develop and use science and technology, for Christians these tools are to be used in the service of man to the glory of God, whereas secular humanists view these things as instruments meant to serve human ends without reference to God. In their inquiries concerning the origins of life, secular humanists do not admit that God created man from the dust of the earth, having first created the earth and all living creatures on it from nothing. For secular humanists, nature is an eternal, self-perpetuating force.

There is no such thing as religious morality. So there is not such thing as secular morality. These are constructs of people who grab aspects of morality for their religious and secular interest to say to the gullible lot, mostly their followers or potential followers that they are holier and more self-righteous than others. It is a branding issue.

Before Moses found the 2 tablets, 99% of mankind knew what was right. Same goes for the other religions. Codifying morality into laws is a natural progression.

In essence it is basically proper behaviour of society some of which changes with time and events. The core morals tend to remain. such as causing hurt to someone, depriving someone of his property, not helping someone who is need of help, being fair etc.

The word secular only came into being in semantic opposition to religious morality. Prior to the birth of religion, there was only morality, no secular or otherwise.

The birth of religion gave rise to religious morality, religious law, and theocracies with all its attendant horrors and abuses – jihads, holy wars, witch-burnings, sati, holocausts, retarding scientific inquiry, superstitions, etc.

This then necessitated the separation of Church and State during the European Enlightenment, which led to the need to codify a set of morals independent of the various religions competing for ascendancy. That's where secularism comes in, and the need to formulate ethics through reason and inquiry without the taint of religion.

Yes historically this is how it evolved. Also include the smaller 'morality factions' like Confucianism which are all political tools.
