Eric Low not keen to contest next election

THE People's Action Party (PAP) candidate for Hougang in the previous two elections is not keen to be fielded again at the next polls.

Mr Eric Low, 62, on Thursday told The Straits Times that age was the main factor in his desire to step aside.

If he were to win in Hougang at the next polls, and victory is far from certain, he would be able to serve at most another two electoral terms of five years each, said Mr Low.

'A younger candidate would be better able to serve residents, with more time to see through longer-term projects in the constituency,' he added.

Mr Low first expressed these sentiments in an interview with Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao, which was published on Thursday.

He stood twice against Workers' Party chief Low Thia Khiang, in 2001 and 2006, and lost both times.
