the BEST SPEECH of the year...

Spend a year in Rwanda or Nigeria and come back and type the same sentence with a straight face.

To measure the success of a government in running a country by focusing only on the highest denominators in society is at the height of hypocrisy and pervertism. How well a country is being managed is rightfully gauged by the standard of living of its lowest denominators. If they are denied even a decent standard of living, can u truly called that country an economic miracle. It's like a father with four children but chooses to feed one with all the good food, best room in the house, luxurious clothings while feeding the other 3 only with instant noodles with only a piece of cloth to cover their private parts and only allowed to sleep in the corridor. And then the father claims he is most successful father by bringing out the best fed, best clothed and best rested one to show to the whole world while hiding the deprived 3 from view. And worse still, the father now begins to take away the instant noodles from these three to give to the one he prefers and to let him place his LCD TV in the corridor taking away their place to sleep too.

Government isn't the only determinant factor of a country's success.

Govt is not father. The people are not govt's children.
You do not give materially equal to all or we will end up being a communist or socialist country and that will be disaster.

This is a true story:

My friend (one of the wealthier ones) has 4 children. He brought them up in the same house, sent them to the same schools, fed them the same food, took them for the same holidays and gave them all the same amount of pocket money. Did he treat them all fairly? In my view he did. I watched them grow up.

Two are now doctors. Both are making piles of money while providing an essential service to the their fellow men.

One started his own HR consultancy after working as HR manager for 6 years. He's doing OK.

One is down and out. He rebelled when he was a teenager and went off the rails and did time in prison.

They were all given the same start in life. 3 grabbed the opportunities that were presented to them. One did not.

Life is what you make of it. The PAP can only provide the hardware and the firmware. The software you have to write yourself.

Chia was not a threat to LKY personally but he was a significant threat to the prosperity and progress of Singapore. Had his socialist/Marxist doctrine been allowed to gain traction, Singapore would be a mere shadow of what it is today. The economic miracle that LKY orchestrated would never have happened.

I will be forever grateful to LKY for his hardline approach towards those who threatened the success of the nation.

Chia was not communist, you twit. Saying Chia is a communist is like saying SamLeong is a Pimp.

The beauty of this speech is in it's simplicity. The delivery with pictures is sharp, like a swift delivery by an expert Samurai with his sword.Contrast this with the upper lipped Victorian style of LKY speech---which only dazzled the less educated.Chee had done it once again.

Will someone please post Sylvia Lim's who spoke with a forked tongue. ... at the International Bar Association Conference held in Singapore. She was practically licking at LKY ass.

What a comparison that would be.

That was a good speech indeed. In any matured democracy you will see a mixture of people like Chee, moderates like WP and clowns like GMS and this is not a bad thing. Voters decide who they want. This election you dint win anything, next election you might. There is no need to run down fellow opposition parties you nitwit. Don't forget they have the voters mandate whereas you are just sticking on to your somewhat shaky belief.

Of course they were. The Barisan Socialis were as far left as you could go without falling off the edge. Of course they called themselves "socialists" but we all know that communism comes in many flavours.

The fact that all the 13 members elected in 63 resigned and took the fight "to the streets" pretty much proved that they did not believe in the democratic process. Imagine letting down the whole electorate that you're supposed to be representing in Parliament for "ideological" reasons. It boggles the mind.

Ironically you are the first to emigrate at the first sign of PAP in power. How to align your arguments?

Life is what you make of it, BUT you must be born into the right country. You, your friend and his four children, and i are lucky to be born in singapore. We just got lucky, nothing to be smug about.

We are a matured democracy hor?Sheesh,no wonder Sinkies are not demonstrating by thousands on the street having a running battle with their police as in Bersih-3 ,a couple of days ago in KL--for fairer electoral reforms.

That's how nature works. It's called the law of natural selection. Without it, whole species would perish. You need to get a grip of the realities of what life is all about.

Life isn't a fairy tale. It's tough and it's brutal and failure has its consequences.

You speak as though a double-blind, controlled experiment was conducted there. How is it possible for a father to treat all his children equally? We are all individuals. Raising a daughter and raising a son are different. Raising the eldest son and raising the youngest son are different. Different individuals have different needs, advantages and proclivities. To apply a singular broad-brush method in nurturing every child just to satisfy some warped sense of equity is both ineffective and irresponsible.

Agree with Govt is not father and people are not children. But disagree with the second one.

You should give equally to all. Not money, but opportunities. And as Sam pointed out, while everyone is given equal opportunities, not everyone will turn out the same. Some become lawyers. Some clean tables.

This is the problem with modern society. It's full of this crap about tailoring the nurturing process to the needs of each individual. When failures occur, it then becomes the fault of parents, society, the food they eat, the air they breath, the impurities they consume, global warming, toxic waste etc etc... everybody is at fault except the wimp him/herself.

Society was a lot tougher when couples had 15 children and they were left to fend for themselves. Younger children were looked after by the elder ones and those that misbehaved were given a hiding.

As parents, their obligation is to feed, cloth, house and educate their children and give them a good belting when they're out of line. Beyond that, it's up to the individual to make good or face the consequences.

The earlier generation of Singaporeans were brought up along this tested and proven formula and they emerged as strong and independent adults who were responsible for Singapore's success. The current crop of pansies are so weak as a result of indulgent parents pandering to their emotional needs that we've bred a whole generation of Singaporeans who wouldn't be able to fight their way out of a wet paper bag and who crumble at the first signs of hardship.

I'm sure the world has always been ruled by hard men toughened up in 15-children, working class households rather than the progeny of aristocrats who indulge their every whim. Which is the largest economy, largest exporter and importer of goods and services? That tough political entity which doesn't pander to the needs of the weak, the sick, the poor and the vulnerable: the European Union.

Research the backgrounds of those who have shaped today's world and you'll come up with interesting results. I'm not referring to the old money.

Only a stupid twit will ask Singaporeans to compare themselves to Rwandans. Totally irrelevant comparison. Why dont you ask LHL to compare his pay the Rwandan leader's? Singapore shd compare themselves to more equal countries like HK, S Korea, Taiwan, etc..

This is never a true story for any society.
Some families are running while others have yet to start. Some are already flying.
