HALLOWEEN horror became real on Saturday night at Downtown East. A 19-year-old youth repeatedly hacked by a group of youths in full view of a crowd died in hospital hours later. The violent attack and subsequent attempt by the youth and his friends to flee left a 500m long trail of blood at the Pasir Ris resort and amusement park.

No one has been arrested and police have classified the case as murder.
Darren Ng Wei Jie was with two friends when they got into a 'staring incident' with a group of about 10 teenagers. Witnesses The Straits Times spoke to said the encounter started with angry words, but this descended into a punch-fest on the lawn just outside fast-food restaurant MacDonald's.

It is believed Darren's attacker produced a chopper and slashed him several times. The bleeding teenager and his friends tried to escape by running towards a row of indoor restaurants and shops called The Alley. The dead youth is believed to have been in his third year at Republic Polytechnic and also in its water polo team. Anyone with information may call the police at 1800-255-0000.

Uncleyap, where were you? CID should wait for you to arrive to direct investigation. Shouldn't you be at crime scene? Don't just concentrate on politics. Try crime.

POLICE arrested four men on Monday evening in connection with the brutal murder of a teenager in Downtown East last Saturday.
The four men, aged between 18 and 20, were nabbed about 48 hours after Mr Darren Ng Wei Jie was hacked by choppers in cold blood and in front of shocked passers-by at the resort and amusement park in Pasir Ris.

In a statement late on Monday night, police said they had followed up on all possible leads and conducted intensive round- the-clock investigations. Officers from the Special Investigation Section of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) established the identities of the suspects and, with this lead, were able to swiftly round up the four men.

The case has been classified as murder, which carries the death penalty. Investigations are still ongoing. Mr Ng, 19, a Republic Polytechnic student, was set upon by a group of 10 people at about 6pm. He and two friends were believed to have been involved in a staring incident with the group earlier.

The group set upon him with choppers, but he managed to run towards a row of restaurants, where he crashed into a glass panel. Witnesses said members of the group caught up with him and continued hacking him. After the assailants fled, Mr Ng's friends dragged him away, leaving a trail of blood.

A matter of 'face'

'STARING always happens for a reason. If you do it, you have to be ready for a fight.' These remarks come from a former gang member as he recalls catching a man staring at him from across the crowd at the youth hangout Orchard Cineleisure 1 1/2 years ago. The violence that ensues can, in extreme cases, end up fatal, as was the case with Mr Darren Ng, 19, who was hacked to death at Downtown East last Saturday following such a 'staring incident'.

Teen who stared at group slashed to death

A GROUP of assailants shouted “369” in Hokkien and flashed a victory sign after slashing a youth to death in a fight, according to Sin Chew Daily. The daily reported that the brawl broke out when Ng Wei Jie, 19, and his two friends were confronted by five men at the Downtown East shopping mall in Pasir Ris, Singapore, at about 5.30pm last Saturday.

Apparently, Ng and his friends had stared at the men, who had tattoos on their bodies, at a fast-food restaurant. The two groups subsequently adjourned to an open space where Ng had a “talk” with the leader. However, this ended in a fight.

The daily reported that eye-witnesses saw a man from the bigger group whip out a vegetable knife and hacked Ng while his friends ran away. The suspects reportedly shouted “369” in Hokkien and showed a victory sign before escaping. Police have classified the case as murder.

3 more plead guilty to causing teen's death at Downtown East
By Alvina Soh | Posted: 05 July 2012 1805 hrs

SINGAPORE: Three more youths pleaded guilty on Thursday for their roles in the death of a teenager at Downtown East in 2010.

Lewis Wee Jun Jie, 22, was found guilty of one charge of rioting and another charge of affray.

Ho Wei Quan, 19, admitted to one count of rioting while armed with a deadly weapon.

Chong Rui Hong, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of rioting.

The trio were members of an unlawful assembly that caused grievous hurt to 19-year-old Darren Ng Wei Jie at the foyer of Downtown East on October 30, 2010.

One or more members of the group stabbed and slashed the Republic Polytechnic student with knives, choppers and a screwdriver.

Ng, a member of the "Fong Hong San" gang, died of multiple injuries.

In mitigation, the lawyers of the trio highlighted the relatively minor role their clients played in the incident.

Wee's lawyers, Subhas Anandan and Sunil Sudheesan, argued that none of the injuries inflicted on the victim were caused by him.

They added that their client did not set out to be part of any physical confrontation.

This point was also highlighted by Chong's lawyer, Josephus Tan.

He argued that Chong was the "least culpable of the 11 accused".

He stressed that Chong was not a gang member and was merely an "unenthusiastic onlooker".

The court also heard that Ho broke away from the group mid-way and later surrendered.

The three will be sentenced on July 18.

Two of the 11 accused have been sentenced so far.

Jason Chew Wei Beng, the first of the group to be prosecuted for rioting, was given four years' jail and six strokes of the cane.

Puay De Feng, 21 was jailed five years and given six strokes of the cane.
