Quite confirm that he does not have enough prominent guest speakers because his children also have to go up on the stage with him. Why he likes 'indoor' and 'closed door' so much?

Tan Cheng Bock announces 'special' rally on Thursday
by Tan Weizhen
04:29 PM Aug 23, 2011
SINGAPORE - Contrary to rumours and media speculation that he would not be holding a rally, presidential candidate Tan Cheng Bock clarified yesterday he will be holding one, but it will be "special" and different from the other candidates' rallies.

Speaking at a press briefing at Rivervale Mall this afternoon, he let on that it will be indoors, and that it will be held this Thursday. He said his son Joshua and daughter Ming Li will be speaking, as well as other ordinary Singaporeans. More details will be given tomorrow, he said.

Responding to the latest furore over the Workers' Party not being informed by the HDB that the management of 26 common spaces have been handed over from the Aljunied Town Council to the PA, he said that if the reports are true, then it is "not right".

"Whichever party is in charge of the constituency, we should give them due respect, because they are chosen by the people. It cannot be the case where WP, PAP (the People's Action Party) have different guidelines. We have to be fair to all," he said.

He added that if elected President, he would want to "break the ice" between members of the ruling and Opposition parties. When asked how he would be able to do it, he said he would organise more social avenues for them to get together, though he acknowledged it would not be easy.

I really can't understand him...the purpose of a rally is not to preach to the converted but to give fence-sitters a chance to know him better and to hear him espouse his vision, expectations and objectives of the office he is seeking election for...an indoor stadium or town hall environment will have only so much standing room...

So how to vote for him? At his age, he consider old already...no energy!

Quite obvious he is feeling his age as the rigours of the PE campaign takes its toll. He actually looked and sounded very tired in the CNA and other Q/A sessions.

He looked like ineffective President also. If TKL self-pwned himself over NS issue, then TCB self-pwned himself by worrying rallies won't attract large crowds AND more importantly, the private & confidential mail.

I feel the question for TCB Strategy has always been such:-

1. Go for the swinging/undecided votes that might have otherwise gone to TT, thereby reducing TT's votes count and to "level" the playing field;

2. Go for the "anti-PAP/Establishment" votes like TJS and thereby ensuring TT's win?

It is always the question how many votes would he lose (not as bad since they will be going to TJS/TKL anyway) in his pursuit for TT's votes? What is the tradeoff?

TCB's strategy is to adopt the moderate path. To do so, it's important for other candidates to set the "markings" for him. For example, TT will be pro-Govt to the core, and TJS, pro-Singaporeans. With the markings well set, TCB will adopt the middle path.

If you want to TCB to give an opinion on something, you have to lay out the two extreme points for him. Otherwise, TCB will be lost.

Conducting his own rally is the most difficult task of TCB's campaign. He needs TT and TJS to be around to guide him and help him locate the middle path.

Elections in Singapore are won by convincing the middle ground to vote for you. TCB has a very sound strategy which most people do not see nor appreciate. He has refrained from campaigning like a GE politician, has moderate things to say, comes across very well on the presidential broadcast and are trying to work off his track record. All these are strategies for a rational person trying to overcome the powerful establishment.

Some people said TCB cut no ice with them. However fire-breathers like TJS also cut no ice with some parts of the population. And there is the SDP connection - having that rally with the SDP politicians and Nicole Seah might sway some voters, but this is still a pre-65 electorate and they call the shots.

I often try to ask people who have openly said they won't vote for TT, for quite a number their reason is always to deny PAP a victory and to send a message again to get on with the reforms. Nowhere I hear them saying that they want an activist president who will do this and that, and gadoh with the government every day. The same reason they said they won't vote for TJS, given that there is actually two other choices out there.

Like that means TCB has the greatest number of guest speakers for PE rally... but he himself got chance to talk or not?

Tan Cheng Bock criticises Tan Jee Say
by Lin Yanqin
02:24 PM Aug 24, 2011
SINGAPORE - Dr Tan Cheng Bock criticised Mr Tan Jee Say's comment made at his rally yesterday that he would "challenge the Government", saying that such issues should be raised privately.

To do so publicly would create "unnecessary friction", he said.

Dr Tan Cheng Bock added this did not mean the President could not raise awareness or discuss issues in the interest of Singaporeans in private.

As President, he still has the power to give warnings or criticise policies in private to the Government, he said.

Speaking at a press briefing at Raffles City, today, Dr Tan also revealed details about his rally at Singapore Expo tomorrow.

He said he had secured his permit from the police.

He has 18 speakers on his list - including his two children - but not all will have a chance to speak. The hall has a capacity of 10,000.

The speakers will be ordinary Singaporeans from professionals to taxi drivers, and none will be members of any political party, he said.

This is because he does not want to be a proxy for any political party, even though members from both ruling and Opposition parties have requested to speak, said Dr Tan.

He reiterated his stand that he would seek to bring the different political parties together to build common ground if elected.
