Taxi driver with good attitude makes $5k a month

154th really know how to spin a feel good story in these hard times! $5k for a cab driver?!

Jobless rates are going up, many ppl are resorting to temporary or contract jobs which suck. A nephew went for an interview for a mid level executive position. Guess what he was told by the interviewer?

"Wa... after seeing you, still got many others. In fact today is the third day of interviews. Still got THREE more days"

Good. We don't often talk about money because it is not too much of an interesting discussion, but frankly I dislike people who talk down on others. $5K may be $50 to you and me and some other pretty established people here, but for a cabbie and what his position could offer it can be considered a handsome income.

If that tonychat drives a taxi, even for quite some time we all know how much he can make a month. Even a temp admin with a humble hourly wage can make more than him.

Anyhow, I wish you the best in your business undertaking. Do your best in Japan! Ganbaro!

bro, its gambatte not gambabru ..the word gambaru means its saying to myself gambatte . anyway , thankyou for your support . i hope all the best to you too .

yes , never ever look down on other people , who knows someday they can make it in life , and who knows , someday we might be sleeping on the street , life is full of up and down ...nobody knows , not even god .

Taxis seems good industry.

Despite the recession, a new company Tiong Asia Marine has been reported to have applied to LTA for an operating licence.

Remember: Good attitude drivers make $5,000 a month. Wear a tie, be polite, don't smoke, follow the example of the guy featured in zaobao

Go for it. I wish you well

What do you mean by good attitude? based on what. There are good attitude workers all around but they can't earn much.

Then their attitude isn't good enough. If it were, they would find things that will earn more. Across all educational levels.

A factory worker can contend himself working for $2k a month or sell char kway teow for 15 hours a day and earn up to $10k a month (don't tell me cannot be done - seen that and his BMW is the proof). The same factory worker can quit to drive a taxi and with the right attitude, make around $3k a month (let's not even go into the $5k a month person).

A sweeper earning $800 a month can actually double his income working in the construction site (seen that). Do you know how many sweepers refuse to work in the construction site because the work is too tough? That is why Indians are eating the lunch of these locals out of their lunchboxes.

A graduate executive can supplment his or her income by up to $2k teaching tuition (don't tell me cannot be done, been there done that. Or bite the bullet, put on a thick skin and double his or her pay selling insurance (seen that).

The only people who are mediocre are those who choose to be so.

Yes, wayanging is a sinkie skill. I suggest you go and tell your PAP master to brush up the look of all the cleaners in sinkieland. And then put in the newspaper that a cleaner can earn $10k a month.

Wow!!! what a news. even cleaner can earn 10k, the country must be very tok Kong.

Oh yes let me add. When the cleaner post for photo, they can use a golden broom for that, WOW.. even the broom is made of gold. EVen better, stand beside a golden dustbin.

tony , do you believe if i tell you that japanese roadside sweeper is earning sin$3000 amonth ?

plenty of taxi drivers in singapore are plain lazy and thinks everyone owes them a living.

sinkies deserve to be trumpled all over by hardworking FTs unless wake up their bloody idea!

it is possible...just that now the taxi driver has got to not only work hard but also work smart...i.e. actively seek out passengers...

That will be about 15 long trips and 15 short trips, averaging about $450 a day, giving a profit of $250 a day after car rental of $200 which works out to $7,500 a month. shave off about 1/3 for time wastages, wasted trips, $5k regularly is quite plausible.

Not impossible at all.

cold hard truth Bro, no doubt about it...competition and high cost of living really sucks...but that is the sad and unfortunate reality in Singapore...i recall reading an ST interview by a local pyschiatrist who is an authority on local suicides...he said that Singapore is a great place to live if...you are from the elite classes...unfortunately majority of singgies cannot make it into the elite classes and many not for want of trying...just luck of draw in the nature/nurture stakes of life...

Tell tale sign - cab parked at your car park. But those I know are friends' parents.

I didn't say life was easy or that $5k is a big deal given the amount of work involved. I was just saying it is possible. And the PRC/India Indian will make much more becuase they will drive 18 hours a day while the Singapore driver will claim unfair competition working 8 hours and wondering why they earn so much less.

In this profession it is not just about the number of hours you put it, but also your skill, not just with the roads but with hunting passengers, but in the latter aspect, some luck as well.

For example it's simply not worth it to drive 12 hours as opposed to 8 hours when you end up not getting more than a couple of short-distance passengers and you are faced with DOUBLE the fuel bill.

Not really. Most cabbies I come across are pretty humble, though a few among them are quite bitter too I mean about their job and about life in general.

In a country which it is truly prosperous, you do not need to take up 2 jobs to supplement income. A job is enough and secure for his retirement.

Good attitude yes, but in what environment. A sinkie environment, no way i gonna work hard for that Unless there is a change in the one who runs it.

Portfoilio Robinrose,

Everywhere is a great place to live if you are a so-called "elite", be it of the Merovingian bloodline or the Rockefellers, the Rothschilds or probably even, a very high-ranking member working under the Jesuit General whom even the last two are said to have to report to daily.

Also for Saudi Arabia if you are not the King's son or relative you machiam terok and you die lah?

Silly boy.

perhaps...but just look at say the scandanavian countries like say denmark, sweden and norway...i don't think you need to be an "elite" in these countries to enjoy a relatively happy and contented life...

Better quality of life is due to socialist populace, with big chunk on social security net. Some countries can afford more than others ie Norway's north sea oil. Still, you get migrant workers from eastern europe.

Back to taxis, cabbies there are more of resident FI (foreign import) -likes from south asia origin ie paks, india etc
