TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Hu Jing-bin (胡景彬), a judge of the Taiwan High Court Taichung Branch Court, was being investigated yesterday on charges of taking bribes in a civil lawsuit, said Special Investigation Division (SID) prosecutors, yesterday.

According to the prosecutors, Hu accepted bribes when he presided over a civil trial about a property rights dispute of a hotel in Taichung City and allegedly let the briber win the case three years ago. The SID also questioned Qui Jin-zhu (邱錦珠), who admitted yesterday that she did give money to Hu.

Prosecutors searched Hu's home and found NT$20 million in cash in his deposit box. Hu failed to explain where the money came from, the SID said.

Hu is accused of using his girlfriend as an intermediary in accepting millions of New Taiwan dollars from litigants and has been taken into custody, according to the SID.

Hu is infamous for abusing his power as a judge, the SID stated. He had been banned from his position as a judge for three years by the Public Functionary Disciplinary Sanction Commission for several counts of so-called immoral behaviors. The SID suspects that Hu was involved in more than one corruption case and is conducting further investigations.
