High winds haranguing the eastern seaboard of the US are also launching vast sheets of ice off the Niagara River onto dry land in what has been dubbed an ‘ice tsunami,’ much to the consternation of local residents.
Wind speeds of up to 75 mph, hurricane strength, have damaged power lines and felled trees in some parts of the Great Lakes region, including both the Canadian and US sides of Niagara Falls.

“Strong winds blowing ice over the retaining wall from the lake,” local police warned. “Drive with caution.”

Residents of Hoover Beach were asked to voluntarily evacuate as a precaution ahead of the potential onslaught of an ‘ice tsunami,’ a phrase which may not feature in most local emergency preparedness meetings. Ice tsunamis are formally referred to as “ice shoves, ice pushes, or ivu” and have been studied throughout the last century.

They typically occur in early spring as the ice sheets weaken and begin to break up, as seen along the shores of the Great Lakes. Ice shoves measuring up to 16 feet tall were recorded along Alaska’s Chuck Sea in 2001.

“Basically, this is the same process as a storm surge, but you’re dealing with sub-freezing temperatures,” Andrew Futrell, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) administrator at North Carolina State University, told IFLScience.

“Instead of ruining a house by flood damage, [the ice] can bulldoze over structures.”
Up to 100 million people were subjected to wind advisories along the Great Lakes region in recent days thanks to the same system that created snow in parts of Arizona and even in Las Vegas.

I can call this a REVERSED GLACIER. It is a spectacular phenomena! The push is upwards against gravity unlike normal glacier, and the type of water is Ice instead of snow. For this to work, the freezing temperature of environment and the breaking strength have to be in the perfect condition to work. Semi flowing and crushing Ice temporarily freeze together to transmit the push forward [a great distance] breaking away from layer below which cannot move, [you hear the breaking sounds] and when they break they burst and push upwards - a little like a mini explosion. That is why it can climb upwards and overcome obstacles. On the very frontal edge, the ice from the top falls down and forward to cover new grounds, but those contacting ground will get buried and stuck there. Whole thing moves forward like flowing volcano lava.

Lava & glaciers can not move upwards because the lack the exploding burst breaking stress that thrust and accumulate volume higher and higher. The amazing thing is fractured Ice STAYS at their raised position, and then more other fractured ice fragments can get on top of them, higher & higher and can only drop down on the very front - not dropping backwards. Or else this whole ghostly phenomena won't happen.
