SINGAPORE: A man dressed in what appeared to be samurai garb and carrying a sword apparently caused quite a stir on a Singapore commuter train on Monday afternoon.

Tweets and photos from a commuter on an MRT train sent at about 1pm on Monday showed the heavy-built man on board the train, with other passengers in the carriage leaving him a wide berth.

The tweets said the police and MRT staff were "quite fast" in their response.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page later on Monday, public transport operator SMRT said it was alerted of the incident which took place at 12:30pm.

It said a man dressed in a samurai outfit had jumped the fare gate at Paya Lebar MRT station and brought a samurai sword on board a train.

SMRT said its staff informed the police immediately.

The man was detained at 12.45pm at Bugis MRT station, and the incident is now under police investigation.

SMRT said passenger safety is its priority, and it does not allow weapons to be brought onto its trains. - CNA/gn

Sword-wielding 'subway samurai' faces flogging in Singapore

Tuesday, Dec 17, 2013

SINGAPORE - A subway commuter in Singapore is facing the prospect of five years in jail plus flogging for wielding a sword on board a train while dressed in samurai attire.

Metro operator SMRT said police were called in Monday after a man wielding a samurai sword jumped a fare gate at a suburban station and boarded a train headed towards the city.

A police spokeswoman said he was detained for possession of a weapon, an offence which is punishable by up to five years in jail and a mandatory minimum of six strokes of a cane.

She did not respond to queries about his nationality or age.

Photographs posted on social media by other passengers on the train showed the man wielding the sword while dressed in a white T-shirt and Japanese "hakama" pants usually worn by martial arts practitioners.

He appeared to sport frizzy, shoulder-length hair. "From the waist up he looked like a rocker, but from the waist down, he looked like a samurai," witness Kim Bomhae told the Straits Times newspaper.

The images posted on Facebook and various blogs showed police officers and passengers keeping a wide berth as the man brandished the unsheathed sword on board the trainHe was apprehended by police who tailed him after he alighted at City Hall station at the heart of Singapore's civic district.

The bizarre incident immediately drew online derision. "Seems like a good way to ensure you get your personal space on the train," wrote Ahmad Zhaki Abdullah on the Straits Times' Facebook page.

Congestion on the 150 kilometre-long (93-mile) metro network has fed resentment among Singaporeans in recent years.

The suspect arrested for wielding a samurai sword in public is believed to be a man named Peter Chua.

On Monday, Mr Chua, who was dressed partly like a Japanese martial art exponent, took a samurai sword on board an MRT train before he was arrested at Victoria Street near Bugis station.

A search on Facebook found a user named Peter Chua who identified himself as a professional tattoo artist and a "head martial arts instructor of Japanese swordsmanship" at Iaido Club. He also shared a widely circulated photo of the man armed with a samurai sword on the MRT train, without saying he is the person in the picture. Other users, however, commented on the photo saying that they suspected the man was him.

The case is now being probed under Section 7(1)(a) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act. If charged and convicted, he faces a jail term of up to five years and mandatory caning of at least six strokes.
