Stench and Spillage From Rubbish Collection Trucks - A Potential Health Hazard

Singaporeans are made to believe that their Nation is truly of a First-World type where everything is spick and span and nothing is done in a manner that may affect the well-being of Singaporeans.........Only fools will believe.......

Just look at the way rubbish collection takes place everyday in public and private estates, including commercial areas.

Once upon a time these was the exclusive responsibility of Kementerian Tong Sampah (Environment Ministry). Today, it has been "out-sourced" to some other operators like what has been done for so many other services.

Whenever these truck comes out to the rubbish collection centre, the whole estate and commercial area reeks of a horrible odour.

The stench enters homes and along with it microscopic bacteria and germs.

The truck then leaves the area with "dirty water" spilling onto the roads. Another source of public hazard.

At times mynah birds will "escort" these trucks helping themselves to certain "morsels".

The poor men standing behind these trucks are fully exposed to millions of germs day in and day out.

None of these lowly-paid attendants (earning peanuts and without medical benefits) wear protective masks. The company maybe saving money by not giving a damn to the health of these workers.

The filthy water spilling onto the road everday from such trucks is surely a "bank" of germs and hazardous to our little children and all of the rest who are are smelling the "aroma" everyday.

Surprisingly none of our so-called brilliant MPs, Ministers and top leaders brought such an issue up.

In Australia (a nation that spends so much on free health care and other welfare) this IS NOT the case.

Why is such a despicable habit allowed to flourish in a First-World Singapore - a nation of so few people compared to Australia?

Why can't these rubbish collection firms douse the rubbish with some disinfectants like the olden days "ayer-busuk".

The government wants to save money and so had such a health-risk service out-sourced. The companies now doing the service is also equally more smarter then the government. They too wants to save $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

More then 30 years ago, it was the same with the "36-doors Mercedes trucks" that went round collecting human faeces. I am sure readers can remember that horrible stench.......

Maybe the Menteri Tong Sampah Singapura would want to comment on these thread.

Yes they do smell. The disinfectant should work.

Good post. Points for you.

Thank you, Clone.

The health of all Singaporeans ought to be given top priority.

The government should be taken to task for "passing the buck to irresponsible companies".

Shame on them and their rhetoric on these subject.

If you feel strongly about this issue, you should write to both ENV and the companies.

See what they have to say. Keep us posted.

rubbish of course smells lah!

if it doesn't smell we keep them instead of throwing them away!

disinfectant contains chemicals which are damaging to the environment.

I don't think it's fair to compare Singapore to first world countries like Australia. At least, Singapore is better than Zimbabwe.

Should we keep our toilets dirty at all times.

Should we stop using disinfectants in stagnant water too.

Should we allow mosquitoes and bacteria to flourish alongside humans.

Please think about the health problems that these filth and its resident organism can inflict upon our children.

I still feel that those in authority should still do something about these daily stench.

Most unbearable when these trucks come by while you are having your meal.

The bin centres in which these spillage is kept WITHOUT disinfectants, especially tropical Singapore is a breeding dround of bacteria, cockroaches, rats, flies and other vermins.

Most of these bin centres are in close proximity of hawker centres.

Look at certain truly 3rd world countries where the rubbish is slowly extending closer to the people's homes.

Giant Australia with 20 over million people can do a good job.

Why not tiny Singapore - home to only an original 3 million.

With the population soon bursting with 6 million, there will be more rubbish, more stench, more spillage and surely more diseases.

Cruxx, very well said.

A truly good comparison with the worst country in the whole world.

When it was Rhodesia, it was much better.
