Kra Canal: Golden opportunity or commercially unviable?
The idea of digging a shipping canal through southern Thailand is not new, but it is gaining currency again because of China's One Belt and One Road initiative. However there is stiff opposition to the Kra Canal project.

BANGKOK: The Kra Canal has been making headlines in Thailand again after reports of renewed interest from several Chinese companies to develop the project.

thanks to ah tiong for trying to kill us off.

a matter of time ...

as technology advances ...

wait till you see the Kra project on stream............ it will be a ghost port

not surprising. Shanghai has overtaken us for 2 years already as world's busiest port.

With all the land freed up by the closure of the port, PAP can escalate their plan to have a population of 10+ million

Perhaps not as dire now as we thought, these days the number of days saved is much lesser than when the project was first mooted, mooted again and then again and again. Perhaps now with the support of the Chinese it may take flight but some would wonder, would it effectively cut off or divide Thailand along this line?

There is no need for Kra canal. And Thais have no appetite for such a project. It will only save maximum 3 days so the costs of paying to sail through will not be profitable as suez and panama save two weeks or more in sailing days.
But Thais and china are building a super port at tavoy, Myanmar. This will be the main port for Thais and yunan and Sichuan province and Tibet, plus it can serve Myanmar and Bangladesh also. It's only 100 km from Bangkok and can be linked by building highways and railway tracks. And it has access to LNG and oil in Bengal bay. So if they build a refinery, and power stations, industries will be attracted the set up there as labour and land is cheap.

Number 1 in what? Price? About time those yaya papayas learn their place.

With the polar caps melting, kra simi lan jeow canal also no use. All ships will sail north, direct n no pirates n away fro Middle East from west to east.
