From Bronco to Warthog

ST Kinetics Awarded £150m for Delivery of over 1000 Bronco Armored All Terrain Tracked Carriers to Replace the British Forces' Viking All-Terrain Vehicles in Afghanistan

Earlier this month (December 08) the British MoD selected the Bronco for its 'Warthog' all terrain vehicle, replacing 108 Swedish made BvS10 Viking currently in service with the Royal Marines and British Army. The vehicles are fulfilling a capability gap addressed by Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR) stated by the units in Afghanistan. (more...)

The Viking, a 14.2 ton gross vehicle weight (GVW) troop carrier is configured to carry a payload of 6 tons or 12 soldiers. It was originally selected for the Royal Marines for its multi-role, all terrain, rapid deployment operational capability as a lightly armored vehicle capable of operating in jungle, desert and arctic conditions.

Despite their versatility, the Afghan arena proved too tough for the Vikings. While the vehicles effectively negotiated the terrain and provided limited protection against light threats, additional armor protection required to protect from the heavier threats typical to the Afghan conditions severely limited their operational capability and necessitated rapid replacement. Consequently, MoD was seeking a heavier, better protected vehicle to maintain the high level of mobility and operational flexibility without compromising protection.

Bronco with 18 ton GVW was selected for this role, not only for the added payload capability (which translates to capability to carry heavier armor) but also since its the curb already includes integral armor. Singapore Technologies Kinetics Ltd (ST Kinetics) was awarded a contract of about £150m (about S$330m) for the acquisition. The vehicle deliveries will commence in third quarter 2009, with the majority to be delivered in 2010. Four Warthog variants will be built under the contract - Troop Carrier, Ambulance, Command, and Repair & Recovery. ST Kinetics is Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) land systems arm.

Some 600 Bronco ATTCs are already operational with the Singapore Army. The Bronco's articulated design delivers exceptional mobility across a wide range of terrain and climate. The basic vehicle is delivered with an armor protection which could be augmented to meet MoD requirements, primarily to increase protection against roadside bombs. Bronco will also deliver considerable increases in range, payload and internal capacity over incumbent vehicles currently being used in Afghanistan.

Swedish buses better than Sinkie buses? Oh I forgot, Sinkie don't build buses! Now why would British buy Bronco? Maybe it's cheaper, since now they are trying to cut their defense spending after lau sai-ing in Iraq and Afganishtan?? ST technologies better make sure their QA goes up, if any Brit soldiers head kena bleeding by 7.62 AK rounds, sure kena F by the British later..lol

BVS10 armour

Bolt-on armour plates provide protection against 7.62mm armour-piercing rounds and 152mm artillery shell fragments from a range of more than 10m. The vehicle is rated to protect against 0.5kg charge anti-personnel mines.

Remember Volvo?

The vehicle is equipped with a 5.9l in-line six-cylinder turbo diesel engine designed by Cummins and producing 250bhp (183kW at 2,600rpm), more than twice the power of the Bv206. The maximum torque is 840Nm at 1,600rpm. The Allison MD3560 six forward plus one reverse speed automatic transmission has differentials and final drives on both the rear and front cabins. Hagglunds produced new designs of drive sprockets, tracks, road wheels, chassis and suspension for the Viking.

The Viking's speed on flat terrain is comparable to that of a modern infantry fighting vehicle. The speed requirement specifications of 50km/h on level class A roads, 35km/h on tracks and 15km/h cross country have been exceeded in vehicle trials: for example, the Viking achieved road speeds of over 80km/h. The range on metalled roads is 300km.

The rear and forward cabins are linked by a two-way voice communications unit. The rear cabin can carry eight fully equipped marines. Alternatively, the rear cabin can carry a mortar section, a heavy machine gun section or a fully equipped anti-tank detachment with Milan anti-armour missiles and firing posts. Both cabins are fully air-conditioned.

The roof of the forward cabin is fitted with a ring mount for a 12.7mm Browning heavy machine gun or a 7.62 general purpose machine gun. The driver or vehicle commander can operate smoke dischargers on the front of the vehicle which can fire smoke or white phosphorous grenades.

A new SBS Volvo bus cost $500,000. I did my sums. It's S$330,000 for a Bronco. Who is making money? You do yours!

I was once train to use the bronco for 1 mono as a platoon sgt in 42 sar, much much better then other ATC ( M113 & BX ) in term of servicing and comfort. Outfield dmg also very minimal, can't find any negative points about it so far

Any armoured guys here care to comment?

The news report is wrong. It cannot be for 1000 vehicles. The price is too cheap.

This purchase by the Birtish MOD is a flash in the pan. I don't think you will see it again. the original Bronco was a distant copy of the Swedish BV206 (ST Eng has denied this), but with various improvements such as more armour, more powerful powertrain, different design for the articulation system, etc. What happened was that the British had a good experience with their similar BVs10 Vikings and wanted to buy more from the British maker with the modifications. The British company could not accomodate them in the time frame. So, when the Brits look around for a vehicle that could meet their requirement and at the same time be available for production immediately, ST Eng. got lucky because they were the only game in the world. I am sure they were as surprised as everyone else. Their marketing efforts have been on the Bionix and its derivatives. But I guess a sale is a sale in today's climate. Once the British maker of the Vikings have got their act together and am ready to produce the improved Viking, I don't think u will see any more follow on orders for the Warthog. Remember that this purchase was made under the urgent operational requirement and not a normal purchase with offset discussions and tech transfers and all that. So, it was sort of the exception.
