</section>Sony Pictures (6758) will release “The Interview” in a limited number of theaters on Christmas Day, reversing an earlier decision not to release the picture on that date amid threats of violence.
Sony will screen the Seth Rogen-directed movie at the Alamo Drafthouse chain, based in Austin, Texas, and the Plaza Theater in Atlanta. Laemmle Theaters said on Twitter it will screen the fictional comedy about a plot to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at its North Hollywood location beginning Dec. 31.
“We have never given up on releasing ‘The Interview’ and we’re excited our movie will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day,” Michael Lynton, chief executive officer of Sony Entertainment, said in a statement today. “We are continuing our efforts to secure more platforms and more theaters so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience.”
Has the Internet Ever Seemed Scarier?
The studio scrapped the Dec. 25 debut after the four biggest U.S. theater chains took the movie off their schedule, a response to threats from hackers linked to North Korea. President Barack Obama said last week the studio’s capitulation to terrorists would hinder freedom of expression.
“As the President made clear, we are a country that believes in free speech, and the right of artistic expression,” White House spokesman Eric Schultz said today in a statement. “The decision made by Sony and participating theaters allows people to make their own choices about the film, and we welcome that outcome.”

</figure>[h=2]Stepped Forward[/h]Smaller chains and independent theaters stepped forward this week to screen the movie. None of the major chains have said they will show the film, and representatives for the four largest exhibitors didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
“The Interview” stars Rogen and James Franco as a pair of television journalists who are directed to kill Kim by the Central Intelligence Agency. The studio’s executives were concerned enough about the fateful scene that Sony Corp. CEO Kazuo Hirai personally approved a toned-down version. Lynton consulted with Rand Corp. and the U.S. State Department.
Cyber-terrorists protesting the film attacked Sony’s computer system Nov. 24, and released thousands of documents including credit card information, social security numbers and health records of Sony employees. Sony maintained its plans to release the film until the hackers’ threats grew violent and spooked theaters.
[h=2]International Furor[/h]The attack escalated into a geopolitical incident. Obama addressed the situation in an interview last week while Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, criticized North Korea at a UN forum yesterday.
Sony pulled trailers and marketing materials after canceling the release while Rogen and Franco called off publicity appearances. Lynton said in a CNN interview last week that Sony still planned to release the film, and was exploring how to do it.
“Freedom has prevailed!” Rogen said on his Twitter page today. “Sony didn’t give up!”
Sony also plans to release the film via video-on-demand, according to TheWrap. Releasing the movie without the major theater chains will undercut ticket sales, as the four largest - - Regal Entertainment Group, AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., Cinemark Holdings Inc. and Carmike Cinemas Inc. -- operate more than half of the theaters in the U.S., according to the National Association of Theater Owners.
“I’m actually really surprised that Sony would reverse course and agree to show the movie given the risks and a limited release -- which seems like more of a stand than an attempt to generate box office,” Eric Wold, an analyst with B. Riley & Co., said in an e-mail.“But, given that President Obama is behind the release, I would assume Sony can use that as a rationale.”

For too long, the Japs have been relying on the US security treaties. That has made them soft. It was a shameful day for all Japanese when the Japs at Sony were intimated by their former colonial subjects, the garlic-eating Koreans. All Japs I know look down on the Koreans as an inferior race. A true Jap only advances, never retreats, when dealing with garlic-eaters and Chinks.

Sony to show 'The Interview' on Youtube, other Internet channels

Sony Pictures will make its controversial comedy, "The Interview," available starting on Wednesday through online video platforms run by Google Inc, Microsoft Corp and Sony itself, the studio said.

Sony, which just last week canceled the release of the comedy - about two TV talk show hosts who are sent to North Korea to assassinate its leader Kim Jong Un - is now looking for ways to widen its distribution beyond a small group of some 200 independent theaters.

The movie, which triggered the most destructive cyberattack ever to target a US company, will be available starting at 10 a.m. Pacific Time on Google Play, YouTube Movies, Microsoft's Xbox Video and a dedicated website, www.seetheinterview.com.

The sites will offer the raunchy comedy, which stars Seth Rogen and James Franco, to rent for $5.99 or buy for $14.99.

"It was essential for our studio to release this movie, especially given the assault upon our business and our employees by those who wanted to stop free speech," Sony Entertainment Chief Executive Michael Lynton said in a statement.

"We chose the path of digital distribution first so as to reach as many people as possible on opening day, and we continue to seek other partners and platforms to further expand the release." Sony said on Tuesday it was trying to secure other platforms to reach the largest possible audience after major theater chains refused to show it. That followed threats of September 11, 2001 style attacks from a group that has embarrassed Sony by releasing a series of emails and other confidential information.

US President Barack Obama last week blamed the cyberattacks on North Korea, adding to a chorus of criticism by politicians and Hollywood actors, screenwriters and directors accusing Sony of succumbing to censorship.

No cable or satellite TV operator has yet agreed to make "The Interview" available through video on demand.

CNN, which first reported that Sony was in talks with Google's Youtube on releasing the movie, said the studio also had held talks with Apple Inc about making the comedy available on its iTunes store but that the negotiations broke down.

Obama vowed in a news conference on Friday to respond to the cyberattack "in a place and timing and manner that we choose."

Japan, meanwhile, has begun working to ensure basic infrastructure is safe and to formulate its diplomatic response, officials said, fearing it could be a soft target for possible North Korean cyberattacks in the escalating row over the Sony Pictures hack.

Google, Microsoft help screen Sony film

Google and Microsoft have joined forces with Sony, using their online might to release the movie The Interview to online audiences despite threats from hackers.

"Of course, it was tempting to hope that something else would happen to ensure this movie saw the light of day," Google chief legal officer David Drummond said in a blog post on Wednesday.

"But after discussing all the issues, Sony and Google agreed that we could not sit on the sidelines and allow a handful of people to determine the limits of free speech in another country - however silly the content might be."

The Japanese entertainment giant began contacting Google and other companies a week ago to pursue potential for The Interview to be made available for streaming to viewers on the internet, according to Drummond.

"A cyber-attack on anyone's rights is a cyber-attack on everyone's rights, and together we need to defend against it," Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said in a blog post.

"After substantial thought, we decided to stand up with Sony and work with others to ensure that freedom of expression triumphs over cyber-terrorism."

Using their platforms as online stages for the film is expected to make Google and Microsoft targets for hackers who hit Sony's film unit with a devastating cyber attack.

Late Wednesday morning in California, The Interview became available for rent in high-definition streaming at Google Play, YouTube Movies, Microsoft's Xbox Video service and at a dedicated seetheinterview.com website for a price of $US5.99 ($A6.48).

Digital copies of the film could be purchased for $US14 ($A15.15) "It was essential for our studio to release this movie, especially given the assault upon our business and our employees by those who wanted to stop free speech," Sony Entertainment chief executive Michael Lynton said in a release.

"I want to thank Google and Microsoft for helping make this a reality."

The Interview outraged North Korea by lampooning dictator Kim Jong-Un.

The madcap comedy became available for rent in the United States on several platforms, one day before its December 25 limited cinema release.

The future of the film had been in doubt after Sony said last week that it was cancelling the release after a hacking attack on its corporate network and threats against moviegoers.

The US government blamed the attack on North Korea, reportedly angry at the film's cartoonish portrayal of Kim's communist regime, and President Barack Obama threatened reprisals.

The unexpected release of The Interview is making headlines around the world, but for now only people inside the U.S. can see the film. Perhaps unsurprisingly, 200,000 people have already circumvented this restriction by turning to torrent sites where the film appeared just an hour after its official release. Even The Pirate Bay joined in and started pointing people to the movie as well.</header>
