A Singaporean couple got a bit of a scare at Woodlands Checkpoint on April 20. 30-year-old civil servant Chen and her husband were on their way back from a shopping trip in Johor Baru when they were stopped by an officer for a random screening. The couple, who entered Malaysia at around 10am, returned to Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint at 8pm on the same day.
The couple, who entered Malaysia at around 10am, returned to Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint at 8pm on the same day.

They cleared security checks, Chen told Lianhe Wanbao, and were about to leave the checkpoint when they were stopped and brought aside.

The officer then asked for their passports and instructed them to wait in a small room. According to Chen, there were about six other people in the room.

"Another security officer then requested to check our purchases."

"We were told that as we spent less than 48 hours outside Singapore, we would have to do tax declarations if the value of our purchases exceeded $100," said Chen.

Her husband was carrying a shopping bag containing two pairs of newly purchased sneakers.

Fortunately, he had kept the receipt which showed that the price of the shoes totaled to about 400 ringgit (S$130). And since there were the two of them, the couple did not exceed the $100 tax relief threshold.

"The security officer agreed that we did not have to declare our purchases and did not have to pay a fine, so he allowed us to leave the customs," Chen added.

Even though it took only 15 minutes, the incident left the couple feeling shaken.

They did not know that the tax relief threshold had been reduced in February, and said that as they were leaving, they saw a few others who appeared to be confused as they were called into the small room.

Now, travellers who spend less than 48 hours outside Singapore will get GST relief for the first $100 (instead of $150 currently) of the value of goods. Travellers who spend at least 48 hours outside Singapore will get GST relief for the first $500 (instead of $600 currently) of the value of goods.

Chen hopes that by sharing her experience, Singaporeans will know of the changes in the tax relief threshold, and to keep their receipts so they can declare their overseas purchases when needed.

Fixing your own citizens in a bid to 'get back' at Mahathir.

It's not really the incident; it's the publication of this news story, with an agenda to dissuade Sinkies from shopping in JB.

Fake shit as usual from Shit Times.
Anyone with half a brain would have worn the new shoes and dump the old ones knowing the $100 limit.

Fat Kim that bastard and his team of prostitutes should try harder.

Probably the only cuntry in this world with a gahment that likes to see its citizens pay more for their rent seeking greed behaviour. But then again, 70% loves to get their asshole shafted deep deep.

Sinkies are too easily shaken. Our ICA officers are very friendly. I remember they tried to help me justify my purchase of dog food by using a “nice” exchange rate, even though I was prepared to pay GST. It’s quite a hassle for them to bring you into the office.

Your dog food cost more than the limit they imposed? you must be buying a huge bag of dog food..

Royal Cannine Sensitivity Control 7kg pack. It was about RM230 per pack (in SG need to buy from vet at S$120 per pack). So I’ll bring back at least 2 packs each time I go JB for Jalan. Can’t rem the limit at that time.

Shows indeed the detrimental effects of rent seeking behavior of the PAP government and businesses in Sinkieland...But again, 70% loves it, so cannot complain. Haha.

The limit I think was more than S$200 back then...guess now you can only but
buy back one 7kg bag or get a receipt that says the bag of 7kg cost RM70...be creative, get the pet shop that sells that, write you a receipt & buy 3 bags...not too many, 'tau chiak' must be smart too.

Ah... my lost twin? Indeed Royal cannine does carry cat food. Some of the flavours are available open market. In SG thanks to the law made by Lawyers and Doctors, they will only let you buy certain flavours from the vet. Fucking hell. “Sensitivity control” poses no danger to any pet, not even human, since it is tailored for sensitive stomach. Nothing can be safer than consuming this. They should control sale of nuts instead, they could kill kids who are allergic to nuts.

this is to prevent sinkies from making multiple trips to jb within a day or two to buy cigarettes by the carton and selling them for profit in sg to sinkie smoker-losers. smoking in sg is sexceptionally popular, and in fact the smoking population among youths and working adults has dramatically increased over the last 6.9 years to the detriment of campaign messages for a healthier lifestyle in sg. the message simply falls on deaf ears with a double whammy as more foreign trash smokers flood sg while sinkie youth take up smoking like the plague. sexpect hospitals and clinics in sg to be more crowded with these losers as they get older and sicker.
